Jul 2020 – 141 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 1 Special”, ca. 1911. A mahogany adamantine finish on a 13.25-inch tall by 15-inch wide cabinet case with an ivory dial. It plays Westminster chimes on the quarter hours on “four patented resonated And boy, it sounds great. The dial is signed and has an unfortunately noticeable hairline; the case is practically There is a flat replacement glass in the bezel, it should be convex. There is a slide switch just above the ‘6’ on the dial that allows you to turn off the chimes. The movement is signed and running, striking on schedule. model sells regularly on eBay for around $250.

Seth Thomas “Sonora Chime, 4 Bell”, and also called, “Chime Clock No. 1 Special”, ca 1910.

Case has a mahogany adamantine finish, brass ball feet, bezel and sash. 8 day, movement No.89, and chime movement No.90, clock running. 4 hammers play Westminster Chimes on 4 bells, and a 5th hammer strikes the hours. There is a silencing lever on the side. The case is 15 inches wide, 13 1/2 inches high. 5 inch silvered dial has considerable wear. Glass is convex. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 212.

Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Chime Clock No. 1 Special”, ca 1911.

This clock is a cut above the average mahogany adamantine finished case. The company made about 4 slightly different styles of this model, this being the earliest and the nicest. This clock has four brass ball feet, and a near perfect 13″ high case. Flat glass in the sash and a rarely seen porcelain dial that is signed, “Seth Thomas / Sonora Chimes”. The dial is perfect, no loss of the black painted numerals or minute marks. On the original backboard is a complete paper label of the selling jeweler, and a partial ST label. The two large movements are running and striking the four resonated bells on quarter hours and hours as it plays Westminster Chimes. The running movement is marked, “89M”, the Sonora Chime movement marked, “90”. Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 148-149.

Adamatine red mahogany case, 13.5 inches high and 15 inches wide. A few small chips at corners of base, otherwise mint condition. One piece porcelain dial is signed “Seth Thomas” and “Sonora Chimes”, and it also has “chime” and “silent” switch. Dial is clean and crisp, one tiny chip at the fast and slow indicator. Good label on back, additional chime and silent switch on side. 8-day No. 89M movement and Sonora movement No. 90 with 4 bells. Clock is running and striking properly. Overall condition is excellent. Seth Thomas Sonora Chime mantle clock, one of the very poplar 4 bell models, “Chime Clock No. 1 Special”, C. 1915.

The adamantine mahogany finished case is 13″ high, 15″ wide. The surface always looks like it was just polished. We could almost call the clock perfect but there are some corner tics we will blame on Bubba. The 4 round brass feet are in place, there is a full label on the back door, one piece porcelain dial signed, “Seth Thomas, Sonora Chime”. One tiny hairline between 7 and 8. The 8 day movement and the chime movement are both clean, shining, and running. The time movement is No. 80M, and the chime movement is marked No. 90. If it weren’t for the little deficiencies we mentioned we could call this one near perfect. Ly-Seth Thomas #701.

C.1913, Seth Thomas Clock Co., “Chime Clock No. 266”,

8-day time/strike 8-bell sonora chime mantel clock in good condition, with restoration. This case has been refinished and the movements cleaned. There is some minor lifting of the mahogany veneer on the sides of the case, especially near the top with a couple of splits and repairs. The silvered dial has minor wear and tarnish, commensurate with age. The veneer on the front of the case is good and shows off the inlaid panel quite well. You may set the chime selector to alternate between Whittington and Westminster on this model. Not quite as nice cosmetically as the two 8-bell Sonoras we sold in Nov-’02, but still a great sounding clock. Height 18.5 inches

This is the rarest of the Sonora Chime clocks, 8 bells, chimes on the 8 deep resonated bells, each quarter hour, and chimes the number of hours each hour. The chime movement is No. 104 and it plays Whittington or Westminster. The 8-day time movement is No. 89. Both movements are clean and running strong. This very large mahogany case is 18 inches high, their highest-grade cabinet case, with shaded marqueterie designs on the front. The case was rubbed to a furniture finish. 18 inch mahogany highest grade cabinet case, made of the highest grade material, has shaded marqueterie designs. The woodhas been rubbed out to give a suitable look for home or business. Convex beveled glass, brass sash, silvered dial. 8 day movement No. 89, Sonora Chime movement No. 104, plays Whittington and Westminster chimes on quarter hours on the 8 deep toned bells. The movements are clean and in good running order. Collectors have acquired the 8 bell clocks as fast as they become available. Rarely are they offered for sale to the general public. This 22-1/2 inch long case is made of the highest grade mahogany.. Silverdial with recessed and painted numerals, has wear around the arbors and between the 9 and 12. Nice old case has never been cleaned, and should be polished, at least. Would be an outstanding Westminster Chime clock if restored. 8 day, strikes 5 rod gongs, running strong. Bowed glass over the dial. No knob on back door, but available from Timesavers. Original everything, including pendulum and key. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 742.

Condition: the silvered brass dial is oxidized in a few places, mostly from winding and setting the hands. At some time the brass leader for the original pendulum got lost and a workman made one out of a steel rod and paper clip. You can see the original pattern in Tran Duy Ly’s Seth Thomas book, 3rd edition, page 170, fig 453, and it is relatively east to make one out of rolled sheet brass. Chime rods sound nice in this clock. Height 9.75 inches

Seth Thomas “Dixie”, ca around 1900. 8 day, time, strike, and alarm.

Strikes hours on a coil gong, alarms on a brass bell, running. Same type of label you see on the “metal series”, “capital series”, and “college series”, clocks. I would guess they were all made in the 1900-1920 period. If you study (I did) the bronze trimmings used on the metal series, they are probably like the metal on this clock. The original dial is worn. Label inside the case, long label on the back, about two-thirds there. A couple of things stamped on the case at the factory, “M&L*”, and “21”. Oversize case is28 1/2 inches high, 17 1/2 inches wide. Clean oak case, all original. Ly-Seth Thomas No.1120. A better picture is in Ehrhardt, Book 2, page 142.

Seth Thomas, “Drop Octagon, 8 Inch”, C. 1909.

Case is made of Fumed Oak, stands 17″ high. A nice looking medium oak with great flowing wood grain. There are a couple of small dings and a small chip around the lower door latch. A stamp on the back, “A3”, is I suspect the date the clock was made, January 1903. That would be in keeping with the ST method of marking their cases. The company said this case is, “embossed, metal case gilded and lacquered”. The case body as usual is tarnished but should clean and polish nicely. The embossed sections are bands around the top and base. There are four beveled glasses, two with a corner chip. Porcelain dial is signed, clean brass dial ring, hands are correct, and there is a good imitation mercury pendulum. Round 8 day movement, outside count wheel, it is running and striking half hours on a Cathedral gong. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 716.

The case has a bronze top and base with raised gold ornaments, polished brass frames around the four beveled glasses, and stands 11 inches tall. One tiny corner chip on the back glass. Round movement, enclosed spring barrels, signed by ST, running strong. One piece, signed, porcelain dial, has a dirty hairline from 10 to 1. As you know, an ultrasonic bath would help it immensely.
