Jan 2021 – 142 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 4”, ca. 1875. A 27.5-inch case veneered in rosewood with a bit of chipping on the upper bezel, as you might expect. The glasses are old, the dials are old repaints I think, with a bit of chipping and slight discoloration. The hands are correct. The 8-day time-only movement is signed and running, as clean as a whistle, and the calendar is advancing. A nice label on the back of the door. Horton’s sold one in 2019 for $375, and a nicer one in 2018 for $465.

Both dials were repainted by The Dial House. The hands are correct; the 8-day time-only movement is signed and running, and the Mix Brothers calendar is advancing. The calendar rollers are a bit dark; there is a good label on the back of the door. AAC sold an Office Calendar No. 4 last July for $453. You can bid on both Office Calendars No. 4, just state on your bid sheet that you only want one!

This is “Rebecca at the Well”; their pattern No. 8002, complete and original excepting one frond of the palm tree is missing. Ca 1876. Notice that this clock is painted every inch with extraordinary colors of their time on the garments and other features. If I did not know better I would say it came from the factory painted. A true artist did the work. It is so unusual you will want to keep it like it is. 8 day round, French style movement is properly signed; it has an outside count, bell strike and is running. Metal case is 16 inches high. Some minor paint loss, chip on the heavy beveled glass, but the porcelain dial is almost perfect. Ly-American, Volume 2, #843. With this outstanding paint job the clock would have brought close to 1000 dollars if everything were nice. As is, my estimate is .

Eight day, weight, time only movement. A very reliable clock that uses the same movement as a Regulator No.2, the 77B, seventy-two beats to the minute, maintaining power, Graham dead beat escapement. It is on an iron back plate.The 42 inch mahogany case has been cleaned. The normal edge dents here and there where some klutz like me will bump them into a door facing or a piece of furniture. The case has 2 functioning brass door locks, the original 12 inch zinc painted dial with a seconds dial. All the brass is polished and the clock runs well. Ly-Seth Thomas No.377, No.378.

They called it a Keystone shaped movement, with heavy polished plates, Graham dead beat escapement, maintaining power. It is fitted to an iron bracket. The number is 77B, and it is 8 day, weight, and time only. Mahogany case is 42″ high, refinished some time ago. It is not a mint collector’s clock, but is a very good looking, serviceable, running, wall weight clock, which is what most people are acquiring these days. There are 2 brass door locks, the original 12 inch zinc painted dial, with a second’s dial, and all original hands. The brass bob, weight, beat scale, dial ring, are all clean. This is a very nice example of this rare, early Seth Thomas regulator with a few minor case issues. The top left finial is a newer replacement and the cross molding on the case top is missing a 1″ section on the right side of the top. The case is a beautiful walnut and burl walnut accented piece, The porcelain dial, with its ST signature, is in excellent condition with no hairline cracks or chips. The movement is signed “STS&Co” which is “Seth Thomas’ Sons & Company” (1865-1879), the firm’s New York City subsidiary. The hands are original. Ht 47″. Note: Many of S. Thomas’s early cabinetmakers came from Germany and brought catalogs for patterns, thus many of Thomas’s better regulator cases are very similar to German “Vienna” regulators.

Weight clock, similar in a lot of ways with the mainstay mantle clock, the OG clock. This clock is very similar to No. 496 as it is also made of rosewood veneer, shell columns, gold capitals and bases. I can almost call the clock perfect. The gold is about 100 percent. There are a couple of tiny veneer chips that you have to look hard to find. And I am in doubt about the lower glass, so I will call it a replacement. Signed brass movement strikes a coil gong, runs good. The old zinc dial has held the paint much better than we normally see on aSeth Thomas dial this old, and someone has touched up a half dozen chipped places. The old clock actually looks very good. Fantastic full label, a pair of period weights, brass pendulum and key. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 989.

in generally fair condition, with restorations. This clock’s case has very good grain painted columns and over painted gilt capitals and bases (although the columns are upside down). The lower door has a very nice original reverse tablet with parrots (some background is lifting and flaking). The dial and hands are proper style, but new. The movement is an early brass Seth Thomas 8-day lyre plate movement, but 10 to 20 years older than this case. The later cornice top is not correct and needs to be re-done. There has been considerable re-veneering on the case, but it has been done well and mainly needs finish. Label legible, with some losses. Height 32Ó $350-$450
