Columns and sides finished in Onyx Adamantine, other parts of the wood case covered in rust adamantine. Etched front is gold filled. I have never seen that on an adamantine case. Gilt metal feet and ornaments. Gilt sash, bezel, and inner dial. 8 day, strikes half hours on a cathedral bell, running very well. Full label on the back. This is one of the nicest adamantine of this type I have seen to not be refinished. I would call it near perfect if not for a tiny chip on the front base. It has been stained and is actually no big deal. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 1180, and No. 1207. Same clock shown two places?

Seth Thomas and Sons, cast brass case with statue of “Warrior and Dog”, ca 1853-1875.

This large 20″ high case has many cast ornaments attached all around the base, plus the bow and arrow held by the lady warrior. This has always been a poplar model for Seth Thomas. Female statues are very collectable and dog statues are always poplar with everyone, so put those both on one case and you hit the jackpot. The round 8 day movement has an outside count wheel and strikes a silver bell on the hours and half hours, and is running well. Seth imitated the expensive French movements and sometimes copied their statue clocks. The movement and porcelain dial are both signed. This dial is very nice, correct hands, French sash and a heavy beveled glass. This fine old clock has been professionally cleaned, polished, and darkened in places so as not to appear to bright and refinished. Refer to Ly-American Clocks, Volume 2, page 294.

Jan 2021 – 66 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Arcade”, 1915. A 24-inch gallery clock with an 18-inch dial and a 30-day, time-only, spring-driven movement (ST No. 86T) that is so big it is scary. Another clock that has one job and one job only – to tell you the time accurately from anywhere in the room. The case is oak with an old finish, slightly crusty. is new, the zinc dial repainted. The hands are correct to this model. A good label on the back, along with the date of manufacture. It is running without issue. AAC sold one last July for $300.

C.1913, (dated on rear), Seth Thomas Clock Co., “ARCADE”, in fruitwood with cherry finish, 18″ dial, 30-Day timepiece.

Condition: the case has original finish, but is rubbed down nearly to the wood; original dial has some flakes and a deteriorating spot near numeral 2 where someone had put scotch tape to hold some flakes on. Heavy duty ST No. 86 double spring movement seems to run fine. Stained but still excellent label on rear of clock. Pendulum also original. For reference, see Tran Ly’s book on Seth Thomas, 3rd Edition, page 351. The Arcade was introduced in 1913 as a cheaper alternative to the Gallery model, which was sold from 1884 onwards, and expensive to produce. Interestingly the Arcade was offered in larger dial sizes than any other inside use Seth Thomas clock 18, 24, 30 and 36 inches. We have seen a 36 inch dial for sale recently for $10,000 so folks are not bashful to charge for the large size. Ht of this clock 24″

The 18 inch metal dial was changed to use as an advertising clock by “Linz Bros. Jewelers”. The dial has not been repainted, just the advertising added at some later date. The clean oak case is 23.5 inch across in front. The back is an oblong box holding the No.86T movement. It is 30 day, with large double springs, Graham dead beat escapement, 120 beats, and half seconds. It has large heavy plates, resting on a heavy iron bracket from which the pendulum is also suspended. The rod is wood with a one pound brass bob. The movement is signed properly, in running order. The dial is just signed, “Made in U.S.A.”, at the bottom where is should be, and the Seth Thomas name was painted over when the “Jewelers” was added. Ly-Seth Thomas #580.

The original painted dial is quite nice with some flaking beginning to appear at about 10 and 4 o’clock. The hands are original, but the hour hand is missing the little trim element from its center. This timepiece runs on a large double wind spring movement with dead beat escapement. Overall very good to excellent. Height 23.5 inches

The case appears to have been finished in a dark oak stain some time ago. There is a repair (not visible) to the rectangular movement box behind the wooden bezel. The Sonora Chime clocks were only made during that time period. This clock has 8 bells and will play either Whittington or Westminster, striking on the quarter hours. Levers to change the strike or silence the strike are on the side. The hours will strike even though the quarter hour chimes are silenced. The 8 day movement is No. 89AG, and the Sonora chime movement is No. 104, both are clean and functioning properly. They call their case “Mahogany Fine-figured Pattern”. It is 14″ high and in generally fine condition except for one veneer patch on the right side, less than 1″ square. The door latch on the back although very serviceable is not original. The clock is fitted with a 6″ silver dial that is unusually good compared to most old silver dials. Over the dial is a beveled convex glass in a cast brass sash. Under the case are four round brass feet. Ly-Seth Thomas #713.

Condition: The mahogany case has been refinished, and never had a proper finish applied. The silvered dial has now been painted white. This model plays Westminster chimes on 4 bells or Whittington chimes on 8-bells. This is the largest of the Sonora chime clocks with large bells giving off a deep melodious tone. Height 18 inches
