Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 18”, ca. 1883.
The No. 18 is 54 inches tall, this one in walnut
or, possibly, darkly stained oak, with a polished finish.
The repainted metal dial is 14 inches in diameter, with three proper
hands and a ST logo.
Both glasses are old.
The pendulum bob and stick are correct, as is the single brass weight.
The unsigned time-only movement is as shown in Ly,

effortlessly.
No label inside or out.
No two ways around it, this is a nice example.
Horton’s sold one in 2019 for
$1750, as did Fontaine’s.

Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Regulator No.18”. A contemporary clock made as a copy of the ca1909 poplar model No.18.
The 8 day time only, weight driven movement is old and correct for this clock. It is signed properly and identical to the movement pictured with the Regulator No.18 in the Seth Thomas catalogs. The movement is secured to an iron back plate, has Graham dead beat escapement and maintaining power.This is a well made 54 inch walnut case with a very eye pleasing finish. Pendulum bob is not correct and the stick was made to represent an original. 14 inch dial is painted on a new pan. The brass dial ring band inside the bezel is correct as are the hands, brass weight, brass beat scale, pulley, door lock, and knob.If you would replace the incorrect bob this would be a fine clock that most collectors would love to have. C.1910, Seth Thomas, “Regulator No. 18” in walnut and in very good to excellent condition.
The original finish on the case has been rubbed to a sheen. The dial has been professionally re-painted. A minor change, the iron mounting bracket pulled loose from the case and someone used machine screws with nuts to attach it more firmly. Original weight and pendulum are plain brass. The case retains a complete label, plus nickel plated weight and damascened pendulum (plating is a little worn on the pendulum). The only detractions on this clock are some minor veneer splits and small bubbles in the veneer near the top left side, plus bottom of bezel, and a ding near the top rt of the pendulum bob. The oak case is in very fine condition with the original finish. The original dial paint is very good with only a few flakes, and a few more starting to lift. The hands, weights and pendulum are original. This model came with 2 sizes of pendulum bobs over the years; this one has a 6 bob rather than the more common 7 inches. Height 54 inches

overall excellent original condition, with fine original dial (only minor flake at numeral 7), damascene nickel bob and original nickel (plated) weight. The black walnut veneer is in excellent condition, no missing pieces, very minor nick along back edge, commensurate with the age of the clock. Details on this model can be found in Tran Duy Ly’s book titled “Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements”, 3rd edition, page 300. Original movement is properly signed; in addition reflector ring and pulley are also nickel plated. Wonderful label in case bottom. Ly price guide = $4500. The case is refinished. Three of the eight pieces comprising the top of the clock have veneer repair. There are two small areas of inlay repair just outside the door, one by the top door hinge and one by the bottom right of the door. The dial has been repainted. The hands are original. The seconds bit may be replaced. The damascening on the nickel plated pendulum bob is worn, The nickel plated weight appears to be a later, The movement is the standard rectangular style with maintaining power.

Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn., “Regulator No. 18”, 8 day, weight driven, brass movement wall timepiece. This clock came from a home in Scotland.
Walnut and walnut veneered case in original finish has a couple spots of finish loss and some very small dings on the left side front molding. There is a little damage on the side piece near the bottom door lock. The bottom door latch has been modified to work with the existing door lock. Original painted dial in very nice condition has minor loss at the mounting screws and the winding arbor. Original hands. Original nickel plated damascened pendulum bob is now polished to its brass base. The weight has lost its original nickel plating also.

Condition: excellent restored condition, the dial repainted in 1990 by the Dial House in Dallas, Ga, the case professionally refinished, and the movement cleaned. Has nice nickel plated weight and damascened pendulum. This clock is in good running order with a robust tick. Movement, iron back plate, and weight are original and identical to those used in the No. 18Õs back in the early 1900Õs. Movement is signed properly, and running. It has Graham dead beat escapement and maintaining power. The rest of the clock is contemporary. The well made walnut case is 54 inches high and is identical in all respects to the originals. The pendulum ball is the only thing that does not look likeSeth Thomas. The 14 inch metal dial was painted professionally and looks likethe originals. Other things on the clock that are copies of originals arethe door lock, door knob, pendulum stick, beat scale, pulley, and the brassdial ring inside the wood bezel. You sure wonÕt go wrong with this clock.You can locate a Seth Thomas bob on EBay or at one of the many clock Regionalsand Chapter Meetings. For comparison look at Ly-Seth Thomas, page 127.

8 day weight driven timepiece, and seconds pendulum bob. This is a nice example of the No. 18 in a 54″ mahogany veneer case. There are the usual bumps and bruises on the bezel and some case edges but no glaring places showing veneer damage, etc. The extra things are all original, like the brass damascened pendulum bob, wood stick, beat scale, remnants of an old black label inside, hands, and the old 14″ dial that still has the original paint and is very good. Some small chips around the screw heads. No extra holes anywhere. The movement has polished plates and is secured to an iron bracket, Graham dead beat escapement, maintaining power. This is a good straight original No. 18 wall clock. Selling at eastern auctions and clock shows $4500 and more, and not nearly as nice as this one. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 127.

The case is in very good condition with some damage repair to the base area. There are several very small areas of veneer loss. The case retains an original finish. The dial has been repainted and there are some residual glue spots on the dial surface. The hands are original. The door glasses are original. The case back shows a factory date of December, 1884.

Condition: the oak case is in like new condition, well finished. The old weight is from another clock. Nickel plated bob is from an older clock, and has some nicks and scratches. The originals of these have gotten quite expensive. Height 53 inches

although refinished, the veneer on the case is in excellent condition; has a tight grain that resembles walnut. Weight, pendulum, dial, beat scale, hands and pulley are original. For details on this model, see Ly’s book on Seth Thomas (3rd Edition), page 300. The movement in this model is based on the reliable No. 2 movement, but with a 30 tooth ‘scape wheel. True seconds are indicated on the painted dial, which is original, with crazing and some minor flaking. In the past this model has sold for over $5000. Clean, polished, restrung and running. There are some splits and breaks in the wood bezel, but no losses. The movement is correct {similar to ST #2 movement however with 30 tooth escape wheel to accommodate meter pendulum}. Ht 54″

this is one of the nicest #18 models a collector could hope to find. There are some small flakes on the original dial, especially at the attaching holes. The clock is otherwise in excellent original condition. Note this model uses an upgraded version of the famous No. 2 mov’t, with a larger winding barrel and a 30 tooth ‘escape wheel to indicate true seconds on the dial. Retains a good label in the case bottom. Although the clock is running, the oil has congealed around a couple of pivots and movement could stand a cleaning. Case has been nicely rubbed and waxed over original finish. This particular clock with earlier style wide beat scale, as shown in the illustration on page 300, Seth Thomas Clocks, 3rd Edition, Tran Duy Ly, 2004. Price guide for 2005, Ly, $4500. Ht 54″
