    Jan 2020 – 69 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas column & splat, ca. 1835. A 29.5-inch (short drop, 42T escape wheel) 30-hour wooden works clock. The mahogany veneer is complete, the columns and splat repainted and re-bronzed. Both glasses are original, the tablet having lost most of its eglomise painting. The dial shows some peculiar wear between the 5 and 6 and in the middle. There are new paw feet in front, turned feet in back; the chimney caps are a bit nicked up. Very nice label The wooden movement looks ok but I can’t wind the time side and the strike side doesn’t want to strike; I can’t advance Like the previous clock, this one has been stored for some time and a little attention is probably all that is needed. The hands are correct but the hour hand has been repaired. Two old 30-hour weights. This style clock has been selling for $250-$400 when in decent shape.

This is not Thomas’ most common case style for this period, as short drop cases were more prevalent. However, Thomas continued to produce wooden works clocks when many other makers had transitioned to brass movements. The mahogany-veneered case features a dark bronzed splat and two dark bronzed half-columns. Both glasses are original with the original putty, the tablet has been repainted, although the gilt border remains original. The board is wood with period hands, and the 30-hour wooden movement is running and striking, regulated by a period pendulum bob and two old weights.

    Jan 2020 – 70 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas 30-hour Looking Glass, ca. 1830. A Seth Thomas version of the Looking Glass clock, 35 inches tall with a full-length door that opens on the right. There is an escutcheon on the right side (but no key). The half-columns show the original bronzing under an alligatored finish, as does the splat. The mahogany veneer is good all The upper glass is original with the original putty, the mirror has been replaced. The wood dial is quite yellowed, perhaps due to a varnish of some sort? The hour hand is correct, the minute hand not so much. I hung the weights but the 32T long-drop wood movement would not run; it would strike. Old iron bell and a good label, and a couple of old unmatched 30-hour Horton’s typically sold these for about $150 of late.

The 32-inch case is rosewood veneer, dirty but intact; the gold columns were repainted some time ago, the three glasses are original with very nice original designs. The painted contoured dial is likely original as well and has been touched up where the paint chipped off, with faded flowers in the spandrels; the hands are period and appropriate. The 8-day, weight-driven, time-and-strike movement is signed Seth Thomas, Plymouth Hollow, and bears the American eagle in the center; it is very dirty, has several solder repairs, and runs for only a few minutes; it strikes on a wire gong that is either moved or replaced. A pendulum bob and crank are included; there are no weights, but two weights that will work in this clock are listed in Parts (item 902). A dark label from Plymouth Hollow, dating this clock to pre-1865. very original ST triple decker that would clean up with some effort.

    The case is in excellent condition with a recent finish coating added. The original painted dial is in very good condition with several small areas of inpainting. The hands are original.
