in old brass finish, in excellent original condition, serial no. 141003. This is about as good as it gets. This small clock meant for a ladies dressing table or for the nightstand was catalog number 3366, and sold new for $39. That same amount would have bought you a Seth Thomas No. 2, or 6 assorted oak gingerbread clocks. It is certainly true that good things come in small packages. Clean and running with key. The original faux shell columns show some wear, and there are some veneer chips on the base. The two beautiful tablets have been professionally restored (+ fresh black on rear). The cornice has had some veneer replaced on both the ogive and the straights. Main detraction is a dial that has been touched up with a black brush too wide. in generally fair condition, with restorations. This clock’s case has very good grain painted columns and over painted gilt capitals and bases (although the columns are upside down). The lower door has a very nice original reverse tablet with parrots (some background is lifting and flaking). The dial and hands are proper style, but new. The movement is an early brass Seth Thomas 8-day lyre plate movement, but 10 to 20 years older than this case. The later cornice top is not correct and needs to be re-done. There has been considerable re-veneering on the case, but it has been done well and mainly needs finish. Label legible, with some losses. Height 32Ó $350-$450

Walnut veneered case is 19.5″ high and in “almost” perfect condition. The veneer, particularly on the front has a burl look, the grain going ever which way. Note that one finial tip has taken a hike, and there is one veneer nick on the base, right rear. Wonderful waterfowl glass has been rebacked with black paint, looks good, and should hold the pretty scene. The old original dial has had a heap of paint touchup, all outside of the time ring. More flaking each time the clock is handled and someday it will have to be repainted. One day movement strikes hours on a coil gong, running real well. We almost never see Seth Thomas steeple clocks, very few were made. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 1081.

C.1879, Seth Thomas Clock Co., “Sharp Gothic”, 8-day time/strike/ special alarm steeple clock. This clock is fitted with an early version of Winward’s new eight-day railway “alarum”. The strange lever on the upper left side of the case was used to silence the alarm. The strike train is used to activate the alarm, rather than the use of a separate movement.

Condition: Rosewood veneered case in very nice condition in original finish with minor scratches and a small piece of veneer missing on the bottom corner of the door. Original painted dial has some wear, some repairs to a couple of small flakes. Tablet and hands are original. An article in the NAWCC Bulletin of Feb. 2000, pg 85 shows an example of this clock and the alarm. See also lot 348 this catalog. C. L. Horton has sold a similar clock with the same butterfly tablet. Big 8 day movement striking a coil gong, alarms on a brass bell, runs great. Fancy brass Seth Thomas pendulum, lions head. Original Seth Thomas glass, paper dial, silver dial ring and alarm set knob. The dial ring is original to this clock but has been abused, extra holes drilled rather than fill the original holes, etc. The factory stamp on the back indicates the clock was made June 1891. I collected City Series for years and had over 90 different models at one time, but never had the Seattle. It is not in the Ly-Seth Thomas book, but can be found in other catalogs.
