Here it is folks-the “last” of the Seth Thomas “RIO’s”!!! Out of the collection that has made available five Seth Thomas “RIO” wall clocks, this is the final one that we will be able to offer from that source. The others all sold almost as soon as they were put onto our web site. This nice example has an original painted dial and a professionally cleaned and good running brass eight-day movement with a calendar mechanism. The movement strikes the hours on a coil gong. The case has been given an attractive ebony laquered finish. The painted dial is clean and attractive. I’ll keep looking for “RIOs” because they always appeal to our customers. But, I never found one before in our many years in the antique clock business and may not come upon another for years to come. Priced appropriately for for a quick sale to some lucky buyer. Walnut , in generally good as-found condition. There is one little trim “ball” missing on the right side, and the dial has a few flakes and has been shellacked over to try to stabilize what is left. There has been a minor repair to the back right foot and the top back right corner was split at one time and reglued. The tablet is original. The original painted dial is very nice, considering the flaking problems on Seth Thomas dials. The hands are original. The decorative nickel-plated pendulum is extra nice. Seth Thomas City Series clock, the “Reno”, ca 1887, and so stamped on the case back at the factory.

This is another of their earlier City Series models, when design and quality were very important. In a short time the oak kitchen clocks would dominate the shelf clock market. This excellent walnut case is 19.5 inches high, good label inside, good glass, outstanding nickel bob, Cathedral gong, and a brass bell for the alarm. 8 day movement is running, but like all of this collection should be oiled. The “only” negative thing about this clock is the new paper dial. Spend a few dollars and get it painted. Ly-Seth Thomas #224..

Mixed lot: A Self Winding Clock Co, NY, “No. 9 Regulator” case, now with a large Seth Thomas double spring No. 40 style movement, and with a meter pendulum. This is the 1887 version with full glass door w/ no dial surround.

the oak case itself is in pretty good condition with original finish, and certainly of interest to the Self Winding collector. Supposedly the current mov’t was re-worked to be compatible with a meter pendulum, but the suspension spring is broken and we are Not able to verify that it will keep time. So you should really be looking at this as a case and pendulum [with replaced stick], and a separate signed Seth Thomas dial and movement. Ht 70″

Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 9”, ca 1884. This was a very poplar case style for the Seth Thomas Company.

They put their calendar movement in the bottom and called it the Office Calendar No. 12, and they sold the No. 9 cases and movements to the Self Winding Clock Co., who added their winding attachmentand other parts. This walnut case is 48″ high, clean, polished, and in verynice condition. The movement is 8 day weight driven, time only. Painted zincdial is 10 inches. Brass weight, pendulum bob, dial ring, beat scale, allclean and polished. There are no deficiencies or problems that we need tomention. Very nice clock. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 403.

C.1894, (dated), Seth Thomas, “Regulator No. 8” 1-weight timepiece in oak, with no. 62 movement with cut pinions and retaining power.

Condition: the only shortcoming on this clock is the bottom, which lost its small tapered bracket and someone long ago affixed 3 oak moldings, and 2 alternate finials that look OK. This clock was “Presented to Cushing Academy by the Class of ’96, January 1st, 1894″ and the brass bob is so engraved. Retains original signed movement, weight, pendulum, beat scale, hanger, pulley and hardware. Note weight retains original knurled top and bottom. There is an old repair to the bottom of the pendulum stick that is hidden within the pendulum; light colored stick is original. If not for the bottom, this would bring $12,000. C.1905, Seth Thomas, Thomaston, Conn, “Regulator No. 8 ” Short, in excellent condition, with the oak case attractively refinished to a golden caramel color.

The dial, hands, weight, damascene pendulum, pulley and all associated hardware are original. This clock uses the No. 62 movement with dead beat escapement and cut pinions, along with the large pendulum bob (stick only may be an old replacement; hardware is proper). Personally, this case (3″ shorter than the long version) looks perfect with the large bob swinging about 3″ off the bottom. The dial has a couple of minor flakes and some wear to the numerals from setting the hands. Model numbers 7 and 8 have become very popular in the last few years. (See lot 398); ht 52″

Made of quartered oak it is 55 1/2 inches high, 22 inches wide. Near perfect inside, it has an 8 day, time only, one weight movement, No. 68 with a beat adjuster, 60 beats per minute. The movement has jeweled pallets, polished cut steel pinions, polished keystone shaped plates, and is mounted on a large cast iron bracket. The movement is signed with the Seth Thomas logo, and the numbers “383” and “68” are inscribed. Pendulum, weight, beat scale, all very good. There is an original 13 inch white enameled dial that has not been touched.The outside of the case has some indications that it could have been manufactured for use as some kind of time keeping clock although there is no evidence that ever came about. On the outside of the case there are 4 small round holes on the left, at the bottom. There is no indication inside the case that anything was ever there. In fact two of the holes don’t go thru the wood which would leave you to think it was made so that something could be attached on the outside. It is a super clock none the less and you have to stand on your head to even see the little holes. Based on recent sales this clock should fetch $3500 to $4000. Ly-Seth Thomas No.470.

the case retains its original finish with a 3″ thin piece of left return molding split. The pendulum rod appears original but has been repainted. The dial is in excellent condition. This clock shares the same movement as some of Seth Thomas’ other high end regulators, like the No. 19. This is a nice example of a rare Seth Thomas wall clock.

This is an interesting clock, in that it has an 80 beat movement on which the pendulum rides around 4″ off the bottom of the case, which to me makes it a more pleasant appearing clock than the regular 72 beat movement, on which the view of the pendulum is restricted behind the door. The movement is original to the case and there are no spare holes for any of the hardware; movement appears similar to that used in a No. 2. The beat scale has always been mounted in the high spot it occupies. The case retains original finish, nicely polished; the dial has been professionally re-blacked over the original white surface (has nice crazing), and with original hands, pendulum, hardware, etc. Height 45″

The only thing that keeps this from being outstanding is some flaking on the dial. The finish has nice patina, a little dull, would rub to a sheen unless you prefer it as is. This clock has the large No.62 movement with cut pinions and maintaining power. Note also this is the desirable long case version. The weight has split the bottom board, but it has been properly repaired. We sold the cousin to this clock on year ago, lot 304 for $9750+12%. Although this should fare as well, our estimate is conservative. Any Seth Thomas collector would be pleased with this clock. Height 48″

The finish on the case has been rubbed down to a soft luster There is a replacement of the leftmost 2″ of molding above the upper door. There are repairs to the top. There is a crack line along the left return molding at the top of the case. The dial has had restoration some time ago. The hour and minute hands are original. The seconds hand is a later replacement. The dial bezel, pendulum bob and weight are all brass, The door glasses are original. The Regulator No. 7 is a scarce model and even harder to find in cherry.

there are some very minor nicks and scrapes to the case and marks in the bottom from a falling weight, but otherwise, this clock is in excellent original condition. This very clock is pictured in Tran Ly’s book on Seth Thomas, 3rd Edition, page 312, figure 983, and with a current price guide of $22,500. The case retains fine original finish with slight crazing that has been rubbed and nicely waxed. Dial, hands, weight, pendulum and all case hardware are original, and the clock is in good running order. Clock is pictured here in the Wasserman library, against fleur-de-lis wall paper.
