C.1904, Seth Thomas Clock Co., EMPIRE No. 2, brass and glass crystal regulator, 8- day with cathedral gong strike.

Condition: Overall very good original condition. The case has been polished regularly and the original gold finish is absent. The base of the clock was cast out of red brass, which now gives the case a tu-tone look. (pink+yellow) The signed porcelain dial is perfect and the hands are original. This was an expensive clock in 1904, selling for $30, about the same price as a French import. For reference, see Tran Ly’s 3rd edition Seth Thomas book, page 236, fig 713. Ly current price = $550. An unusual crystal regulator with a high book value. This one will not bring top dollar for the “rich gold finish” is gone. A tenderfoot cleaned the gilt off leaving the copper base. The brass sections, not many of them, are fine. A great looking clock but it needs a good finish. The case is 15.5″ high, complete and very good except for the finish. Four beveled glasses, two very good, one with a miniscule corner tic, one with a good size corner chip. Good size being about 1/2″ by 1/8″. Signed 8 day movement, hanging Cathedral gong, imitation mercury pendulum (it is now copper color, I guess to match the case), and a winding key. Perfect porcelain dial and hands, dial is signed, painted loops of flowers. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 742.

Seth Thomas Empire No. 17 crystal regulator clock

It is in need of restoration or useful for parts. The previous owner took the clock apart to work on it, never did and the parts were lost. It is missing the top ornament, cathedral gong, the hands, key and pendulum plus the bolts that hold the top and base together. On the plus side, all 4 beveled glasses are perfect as is the colorful signed porcelain dial. 12″ tall.

Condition: this clock came out of a home in Springfield, and the maid must have polished it every day, as the gilding is totally gone from the case, and it has turned dark brown. The porcelain dial and pendulum are nice. Movement ticks and strikes, but is dirty and will require cleaning before regular operation. Seth Thomas crystal regulator “Empire No. 14”, ca 1909.

This exact clock is not pictured in any of the catalogs I have. It is almost identical to the Empire No.14 in Ly-Seth Thomas No.279. The case is the same, dog is different. Seth also used lions, horses, people, as well as dogs on top of his clocks. Dogs are the most poplar in the modern market. This case is 16 1/2 inches high, has 4 beveled glasses, at least one with a sliver chip. White porcelain dial with faint hairlines and a small chip to the left of 9. 8 day, half hour strike on a cathedral gong, and runs. The case is extremely nice. I can’t see evidence that the gilt is recent, but it is too nice to say it is original and 100 years old. Either way it’s nice.

Seth Thomas, more than the other makers of crystal regulators put a lot of animals, and people, on the tops of their line of regulators. They have become very poplar with the collectors, and dogs still remain the favorite animal. The gilt finish on the clock is very good. 16-1/2 inches high, 4 good beveled glasses have only 1 tiny corner chip. This is a French type movement by Seth Thomas. It is round, outside count, imitation mercury pendulum, hanging Cathedral gong, and running. The case and movement are clean inside and out. The porcelain dial is showing 3 faint hairlines going out from the hand arbor, and a small sliver of a crack on the outer edge of the dial, at 9 oÕclock. Almost identical to the clock in Ly-Seth Thomas, No. 279.

Condition: Heavy white metal case in nice condition with remains of original gilding intact. Original porcelain dial retailed by Bunde and Upmeyer Co, Milwaukee, is perfect and the hands are original. Pendulum is original. All the beveled glass panels are perfect except for the rear door that now has a piece of flat glass that is cracked. Movement is marked with ST insignia. The hunting scene on top has lots of detail and amazingly none of the dog’s legs nor deer’s legs, nor antlers have been broken, a big plus for this model. The gold finish is dull and worn off on the high spots. The flat porcelain dial is signed and has several very light hairline cracks. There is a faux mercury pendulum. It is running and striking on a cathedral gong. model also came with an animal on top (see #300). Key included. Can I return my clock if I don’t like it? Absolutely! This clock is in quite good condition. The gilded case shows only normal gilt loss from polishing. All four beveled glasses and the signed porcelain dial are perfect without any hairlines or chips. It has the original hands and mercury style pendulum. 8 day with hour and half hour strike on a cathedral gong. It is running and striking but the strike will hang up at 12:30 so it will need a small adjustment. 12″ tall.

Case is just less than 12 inches high, is not plain, but highly decorated top and bottom. We rarely see these old crystal regulators finished in silver. From top to bottom, inside and out, even the imitation mercury 2 jar pendulum, and the suspended gong stand, all silver and extremely nice. No evidence it has been refinished. 4 great beveled glasses. 8 day movement strikes the gong on half hours. Runs, but a little out of beat. One piece porcelain dial, hand decorated with garland of flowers, one hairline and it would disappear with a cleaning. Correct hands, machined dial ring. Unusual to see a pretty crystal regulator in a different color. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 278.

One piece porcelain dial with fine hairlines that would look much better if put thru an ultrasonic bath. Small chips around the hand arbor. A magnifying glass will show a couple of minute corner chips in the beveled glasses. Nice 2 vial imitation mercury pendulum, round, signed, 8 day movement is running, strikes half hours and hours on a hanging gong. Some good and not so good things to say about this clock. Beautiful porcelain dial with painted garland of flowers around the numbers. Polished gold bezel is bright; the gold on the body of the case is dull and dirty. 4 heavy beveled glasses, 2 with tiny corner chips. 2 vial, imitation mercury pendulum and a hanging gong still bright gold. The base is green onyx; top is a piece of onyx of another color. 8-day movement strikes gong on the half hours, and runs. Ly-Seth Thomas No.327.

This clock presents a challenge to some aspiring collector. The green onyx base is intact, 4 beveled glasses (2 tiny corner chips), beautiful porcelain dial with a garland of flowers around the inside of the numerals, minute ring outside the hour ring. Very nice 2 vial imitation mercury pendulum and a bright gold hanging gong. 8 day movement is running, strikes half hours. I could have sold the pendulum for 50 dollars, movement-dial for 100 dollars+, 4 beveled glasses for 100 dollars, gong for 25 dollars, empty case for 25-50 dollars, and netted about 300 dollars+. This is an opportunity for someone to restore the clock, sit it on a high shelf so you can’t see the top, or sell all the parts.

The case is in excellent condition and still retains some of its original finish. The signed porcelain dial shows no chips or hairline cracks. The hands are original. The beveled glass on all 4 side shows no evidence of chips. The movement is signed.
