    Jul 2020 – 49 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 64” ca. 1914. This is a 5-bell Sonora chime clock that strikes Westminster chimes on the quarter hours on four bells and counts the hours by striking all four bells at once. The fifth bell serves as a resonator in this model. The round gothic case is 14 inches tall with blond wood inlays (shaded marqueterie) on the front; it is in good condition all around with no dents or scratches. A six-inch silvered dial with even wear sits behind a beveled convex glass. It is running and striking as required, and of course, like all Sonora bell chimes, sounds fabulous. Get one and see, you won’t be sorry. And if you are, I’ll take it back! A similar model lacking the marqueterie sold in January for $629.

    Jul 2021 – #201 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Chime Clock”, ca. 1914. The case matches Chime Clock No. 64, but it is a four-bell chime, rather than the expected five bells. Seth Thomas made four-bell, five-bell, and eight-bell chimes interchangeable, so a four-bell in this case may have been an option. The difference is only in the sound of the hour strike, which in a four-bell is a simultaneous strike on all four bells, rather than an hour strike on a fifth bell. The chimes sound every bit a good in The 14.5-inch mahogany case has lighter marquetery in front and a convex silvered dial behind a convex beveled glass. Here the case could use some rejuvenation (oil or wax) as it is very dry; the silvered dial shows some oxidation but no major defects. The clock is running and chiming on cue and counting the hours. The only significant negative I see is wear at the right side of the dial where it is opened; it looks like a dog was trying to get in. A bit of stain or a stain pen might be sufficient to make it disappear.     Condition: the case is in very good condition with original finish intact. The top movement has been fully bushed, is a bit dry; engraved, silvered dial has some tarnish and losses on the numerals. Both movements operating, and the bells with nice tone. This seems to be a relatively early model 64, as it has marquetry inlay of a lyre or harp, later versions show a scroll pattern. For reference, see Ly’s book titled Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements, 3rd Ed, Vol 1, pages 140 and 156. Ly 2004 price guide $1000. Height 14 inches

Can be silenced leaving only the hour striking. 8 day movement marked “89AG”, Sonora Chime movement marked, “90B”, both running and striking properly. 14 inches high mahogany case has shaded marquetry on the front. Full back door with latch and brass cover with cutouts for sound to escape. 6 inch silver dial is signed, has painted numerals. Wear around all the winding arbors.     refinished mahogany case has some veneer repairs, and some green paint in the crevices that the stripper could not get out; top case joint still a green stripe. Plays Westminster tune on the quarters, and on the hour follows the tune by striking on a 5th deep toned cast bell. The floral inlay on the front of the case is unique to this model.     A slightly later version of the No. 61 clock was produced around 1921, featuring a 3-trillium Westminster chime mechanism and rods instead of bells. This model has been in storage for some time but remains functional. The case retains its original finish with minor crazing that can be polished out. Some screws have been replaced during servicing of the chime movement, and the silvered brass dial exhibits minor scratches and oxidation. This rod version is slightly less expensive than the bell version, standing at approximately 13.3 inches in height.

    Another variant of the No. 61 clock, also from 1921, features an 8-day, 4-rod Westminster chime mechanism and a large mahogany case with an inlaid round top.     Jan 2020 – 326 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 57”, ca. 1914. A 12-inch tall mahogany cabinet that has a severely crinkled varnish finish in need of restoration. It is 17.25 inches wide and 6.75 inches deep. The 6-inch convex silvered matte dial shows some wear and sits behind a beveled, convex glass. The clock is running and loves to chime on the four bells, so much that it will not stop chiming. If you are willing to pull the chime movement it is probably a simple fix. refinish the case while you are at it, and you will have a clock worth twice what you pay for it.     this clock has been fully restored with a new simulated porcelain dial overlay, and a few scratches and losses on the wood case. Both movements are correct, and we heard ticking and chiming on the “resonated” bells. Ht 12″

    The mahogany case has been refinished and there are a couple of runs in the finish. Biggest problem with this clock is it is a 5 bell case and bell set up that got separated from its original 5-bell movement, and a 4-bell movement is now in place. There are several extra holes inside the case to indicate that both movements have been changed. As these were factory produced clocks, the dimensions are basically the same, the mounting slightly different. This situation aside, the clock has a great dial and wonderful sound, chiming Westminster on the quarters. Best thing to do is enjoy this clock as is. Height 12″

    This clock is a one family item, consigned from a cottage in Maine where it has sat for some time. The finish has alligatored, but looks Ok to me, better than a refinish. The movements are both dirty and dry, it will eek out the Westminster tune, strike and tick, but sure wants a cleaning. Retains original dial, hands, pendulum, key and hardware. For reference to this model, see Ly’s book on Seth Thomas, 1996, page 218. Height 11 inches

    This is a very nice clean mahogany clock with original finish, but with a few scratches. The silvered dial is relatively free of scratches but has tarnished, the dial plate is loose in its iron mount, will need tightening when you disassemble the clock. The hands are original. This clock has been in storage and although you can get it to “eek” out the tune, it will benefit from a proper cleaning. This was the smallest size Sonora that Seth Thomas made. Height 9.5 inches

    Jan 2021 – 232 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 51”, ca. 1914. Seth Thomas made about a million models of chime clocks and this is one of the less common. It came in oak only in three finishes, this is golden oak. The case is 14 inches tall with four bells, sounding Westminster Chimes on the quarter-hours and counting the hours with a fifth hammer. The convex dial is silvered with some spotty losses, behind a convex beveled glass. It is running and chiming as you might expect on four large deep-toned Sonora bells. If you don’t like clocks that chime these Sonora chime clocks will change your mind. chimes from Seth Thomas typically sell between $250 and $400.

The hands are original. There is one small piece of oak veneer missing from the top, left, that is not noticeable; (rest of case is solid oak). The movements have been cleaned and are running.     The adamantine finish has been cleaned and polished. There is some damage to celluloid veneer at the corners and along the back edges of the case. The silvered dial is in pretty good condition with some minor tarnish. The hands are original. The rear dust cover is an old replacement, properly made.
