C.1913, Seth Thomas Clock Co., “Chime Clock No. 266”,

8-day time/strike 8-bell sonora chime mantel clock in good condition, with restoration. This case has been refinished and the movements cleaned. There is some minor lifting of the mahogany veneer on the sides of the case, especially near the top with a couple of splits and repairs. The silvered dial has minor wear and tarnish, commensurate with age. The veneer on the front of the case is good and shows off the inlaid panel quite well. You may set the chime selector to alternate between Whittington and Westminster on this model. Not quite as nice cosmetically as the two 8-bell Sonoras we sold in Nov-’02, but still a great sounding clock. Height 18.5 inches

Seth Thomas, Sonora “Chime Clock No. 266”, ca 1909-1923.

This is the rarest of the Sonora Chime clocks, 8 bells, chimes on the 8 deep resonated bells, each quarter hour, and chimes the number of hours each hour. The chime movement is No. 104 and it plays Whittington or Westminster. The 8-day time movement is No. 89. Both movements are clean and running strong. This very large mahogany case is 18 inches high, their highest-grade cabinet case, with shaded marqueterie designs on the front. The case was rubbed to a furniture finish. Convex beveled glass, brass sash, silvered dial. 8 day movement No. 89, Sonora Chime movement No. 104, plays Whittington and Westminster chimes on quarter hours on the 8 deep toned bells. The movements are clean and in good running order. Collectors have acquired the 8 bell clocks as fast as they become available. Rarely are they offered for sale to the general public. I cannot find that Horton’s has sold an 8-bell ST clock in the last eight years. Schmitt’s sold one (not this model) in 2017 for $3600. are a couple of sales of ST 8-bells on LiveAuctioneers in 2018 for $2200 and $3000. These guys are not common. course, it sounds great. $1200-$2400.

At some point in its life, this case was cut on the side for an old style “chime-silent’ switch, and this has been veneered over. On the left side of the case is a bubble in the veneer. Whittington and Westminster quarter hour chime on 8 bells. If you have never owned a bellchiming clock you have missed a treat. Seth Thomas liked to say that thepatented Sonora resonated bells gave off pure tones and rich melodies. The Westminster plays on 4 bells and the Whittington plays on 8 bells. Even in1915 these clocks sold as high as $125 which would have been a months payfor the average worker. Today we have seen some models sell for $5000 or more. We have had a half dozen or so and this one is as clean as any, particularlythe silver dial which is usually worn. This one is very nice. Case is 11″high, 18″ wide, made of mahogany, very nice and clean. Movements are clean, have been serviced, and are running very good. The Sonora movement is No. 104A and the running movement is No. 89. This is as close to perfect we haveseen a Sonora Chime Clock. You should read Tom ChapellÕs article in Ly-SethThomas, pages 206-218, to fully appreciate these rare chiming clocks.

Condition – Refinished mahogany case was sanded and the corners are a bit rounded (still photogenic as you see). All the brass work has been cleaned and polished and the movements have been recently serviced. Original silvered dial has some scratches around the winding holes and a little tarnish. Selector on side for choosing Westminster on 4 bells or Whittington on 8 bells. Dial is signed “Hardy and Hayes Co., Pittsburgh”. Height 11 inches

This clock was a gift to Mr. Bachman”s parents in 1916, and shows no evidence of repairs or service. It does still tick and chime, although a bit sluggish. Mahogany case retains original finish, now with crazing and orange peel. I would think that many of you would like to buy a one owner like this and do your own cleaning. Height 9.5′

this is the smallest of the Sonora Chime clocks, and has unusual Deco-style “S. T.” hands. The silvered dial has minor tarnish, and the original surface has alligatered uniformly. The convex beveled glass is fine. The two movements appear clean and complete, and they tick, strike and chime properly but were not tested long term.

The Sonora Chime clocks were only made during that time period. This clock has 8 bells and will play either Whittington or Westminster, striking on the quarter hours. Levers to change the strike or silence the strike are on the side. The hours will strike even though the quarter hour chimes are silenced. The 8 day movement is No. 89AG, and the Sonora chime movement is No. 104, both are clean and functioning properly. They call their case “Mahogany Fine-figured Pattern”. It is 14″ high and in generally fine condition except for one veneer patch on the right side, less than 1″ square. The door latch on the back although very serviceable is not original. The clock is fitted with a 6″ silver dial that is unusually good compared to most old silver dials. Over the dial is a beveled convex glass in a cast brass sash. Under the case are four round brass feet. Ly-Seth Thomas #713.

Seth Thomas 8 bell Sonora “Chime Clock No. 20”, ca 1909.

This is the top of the line, and the largest at 18″ high, of the “Real Bronze” cases. The base, under my lights, is a slightly different shade of bronze than the top. It was not a cleaning or polishing that changed the shading, it is just the way the bronze cases look. This clock came with the 500-clock Texas collection last year. It was one of the best clocks in the collection and is the last clock to be photographed. I tried to talk myself into keeping it, as I always wanted an eight bell in this exact case. It is clean as a pin inside, and like everything in this collection, it is operating perfectly. There are a few rubs and a couple of dings, but nothing worth singling out for you to worry about as they are insignificant. The Time movement is No. 89M, and the chime movement is No. 104A. The large back door still has the original cloth covering the open pierced section. Two levers on the side, one sets Westminster or Whittington chimes, the other sets the silent-chime.
