Condition: biggest hurt is the missing top crest molding (hard to see it is missing in foto). The top has a new glue block behind it which could be better. Case lost maybe a fourth of its original finish to a wire wool cleaning. Otherwise a decent original clock that will restore fine. Properly signed movement, needs cleaning. Height 19.5 inches

Sometimes referred to as the “Peanut”, this clock is in very good condition. The rosewood veneer on this case is very attractive; but with a couple of age cracks to the veneer on the bezels. The upper dial has been repainted. The case has been refinished. The lower dial is original and in super condition, also with inside label. This very clock is pictured in “A Treasury of American Clocks” pg. 234. Height 24 inches

This clock is in fair to good as-found condition, but will restore nicely. There are a minor veneer chips in both bezels, but the rosewood veneer is otherwise good and with original finish The time dial is a replacement, and the lower dial has been reblacked over original surface and the patent information is worn away. Clock retain original Mix Bros lower movement +rollers and proper upper movement and a near mint label inside. In better condition, this would have fetched $3000. No key; has good label; height 24″

This timepiece is usually referred to as the “Peanut”. The rosewood veneered case is nice condition with what looks like a newer layer of shellac over the old finish. There is small stress crack on the lower edge of the front door. The original painted upper dial is very nice with some minor paint loss around the mounting screws, winding arbors and a couple of small chips. The hands are original. The lower dial has darkened with age and has paint loss around the mounting screws and one small area on the edge. Someone has added a date of 195? and F.R.R. to the dial. There is some damage in this date area. The tail to the calendar hand was broken off and is missing. There has been a repair to the case in the area of the top door hinge. Has a good black/gold label inside door. Height 24 inches

Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Office Calendar No. 3”, ca 1863.

To most of us this is their “Peanut” model. If I had the money and wall space I would attempt to corner the market on this model. This is my favorite of the Seth Thomas wall calendar clocks. I have three in my office and as you might suspect, I am selling the least perfect of the three. If the dials did not need painting I would keep this one. It has typical ST dials, flaking. I am afraid they are at the point of having to be repainted. Each jolt from hauling or packing, will cause more flakes to fall. This little clock is only 24″ high, mahogany veneered, and in very nice condition. The round solid plate, 8 day movement was only used in this calendar model. The calendar mechanism is by Mix Brothers, and all movements, ST hands, and dials are original. Note the near perfect label on the back of the door, and the old brass bob and winding key. Key lock on the side, key included but probably not original. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 92; and Ly-Calendar No. 600.

Miniature Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 3”, or better known as the “Peanut”.

The walnut case is 9″ tall and made to scale. The painted wood dials, hands, glasses, are all like the original peanut clocks. The small time only movement has a wire running to the calendar movement that moves the calendar dials. Instructions with the clock tell you how to move and adjust the “day of the week” and “month” rollers. Pendulum, winding key and tweezers (to adjust the calendar rollers) come with the clock. A label on the back says in part, “Limited Edition of 26 Pieces / Michael Paul / No. 8”. Pretty amazing. Ly-Calendar, page 248.

Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 3”, ca 1863, called the “Peanut” by today’s collectors.

The catalog pictures show the time dial with and without a recess in the center. I have had them both ways. All “Peanuts” were made early in the calendar clock production years and used the Mix Brothers patent calendar mechanism. Peanuts also used the ST hands, S on the minute hand and T on the hour hand. The old original zinc dials have been repainted, which 99% of them have been. 24-inch walnut veneer case is near perfect, and has a good black label on the door. Round Seth Thomas movement runs 8 days, and was apparently only used in the “Peanut” clock. I owned this clock for 20years, sold it to another collector, and recently bought his collection of120 clocks. This is a clock anyone would be proud to own, all original and running. The rosewood veneer is in excellent condition. The case appears to have some additional finish but it has a soft rubbed out appearance. Both dials have been professionally repainted. While the “ST” hands are correct, the minute hand may be a reproduction example. The calendar hand appears period. Overall a very nice example of this model.

Original painted dials have small loss at the mounting screws, at winding holes and a couple of chips elsewhere, but extremely good as early S. T. dials tend to flake badly. The lettering on the dial is nearly worn off, but you can see faintly the word “Calendar”. The calendar drums have replaced papers. Original “S. T.” hands. Ht 24″

About the Seth Thomas “Ogden” Clock

This clock is one of the earlier and more exquisite examples within the extensive City Series collection, with production transitioning towards kitchen clocks featuring simpler designs by approximately 1890.

The “Ogden” boasts a finely crafted walnut case that stands at 21 1/2 inches high, adorned with intricate carvings and ornaments, including a touch of burl walnut veneer trim on the top. The clock’s accessories, such as the pendulum, pendulum hanger, gong base, and bezel, are all of superior quality nickel, a testament to Seth Thomas’ commitment to craftsmanship.

The clock features an 8-day movement that strikes on a cathedral bell. While the glass has been replaced, the original pendulum remains intact, albeit with a broken leader that requires soldering. The dial and certain other components have also undergone restoration, but the clock retains its original label within the case. Seth Thomas Clock Co. City Series clock, the “Ogden”, ca 1886.

This is one of the earlier and nicer of the more than 100 city series clocks made by Seth Thomas. Beginning about 1890 they ceased making parlor clocks and began to make them have the kitchen clock look, particularly using the cheaper accessories. This excellent walnut case is 21 1/2 inches high, with great carvings and applied ornaments. A little burl walnut veneer trim on the top. Seth Thomas made use of their best nickel accessories, pendulum, pendulum hanger, gong base, and bezel. There is an old black label inside. The only flaw I see on this fine early clock is a replaced glass. 8 day movement, striking on a cathedral bell, running. Ly-Seth Thomas No.217.

Seth Thomas City Series, “Ogden”, C. 1886.

This clock was made during the period all companies were making nice parlor clocks each trying to outdo the other on quality and looks. In the 1890’s they were making more kitchen clocks than parlor clocks. This clock is as nice as any city series I have ever had, and I have had hundreds. The case is a beautiful dark walnut, 21.5″ high, with carvings, special trims, dentil molding, and some applied pieces. The carvings on each side of the door are part of the door and not attached to the case body. Inside the case is a black label, nickel accessories including pendulum with circular etchings, pendulum hanger, gong base, gong hammer, dial rings, and the alarm dial, all clean and polished. The movement of course is 8 day, striking the deep toned cathedral gong on the hours, and is running properly. Ly-Seth Thomas #217.

Antique Seth Thomas Paris Clock

Jan 2020 – 65 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Paris”, 1895. Good grief, I searched through over 3,000 Seth Thomas clocks on the Antique Clocks Price Guide before I found a match for this clock; one sold at Schmitt’s in 2003 for $360. It is the only sale on Antique Clocks Price Guide. You will not find this model in either of Ly’s latest volumes on Seth Thomas clocks, but Kyle Kenyon tells me it is shown in Ly’s 1996 edition. It is 15.5 inches tall in an imitation marble adamantine finish, with imprinted black scrollwork on the front. It is embellished with gilt ornaments across the top and bottom; the giltwork is remarkably well preserved, as is the adamantine; I see only one spot to the right of the dial where the adamantine has cracked. on the top finial is not quite as well preserved. The signed porcelain dial sits in a brass bezel behind a convex glass; there is a hairline and a repair near the 11. There is a signed, round movement with an external count wheel; it strikes on a cathedral It is running and striking as required, on the hours and half-hours. There is no label (there are two jeweler’s repair labels) but the bottom is stenciled with the date of manufacture, which confirmed to me that it was a Seth Thomas clock. Hence, the hunt through Antique Clocks Price Guide to find a name. Based on the sale in 2003 I would expect this to sell for between $150 and $250.

This French style clock with adamantine veneer and gilt mountings is in excellent condition, exceptions noted. The front panel shows a little crazing in one area, possibly from the sun. There is a little chip on the black adamantine on one top back corner. The bezel glass is missing; been gone a long time and the embossed brass dial has gone dark. The hands are original. The movement is complete and sound, properly signed and the pendulum is original. The clock strikes on a spiral steel gong. These “French” models do not turn up often. Height 16 inches

About the Seth Thomas “Pattern No. 8055” Clock

Introducing the Seth Thomas “Pattern No. 8055,” a double statue mantel clock, manufactured by Seth Thomas & Sons Company in New York around 1877. This particular model features an intricate design with two statues on either side of the dial.

The clock presents well overall, although it has a few discrepancies. The pineapple finial atop the clock is not original to the design and should be replaced with an urn for authenticity. Additionally, the left statue originally held a flute, which is currently missing. This is a decent clock, but has a few faults: the pineapple finial on top should be an urn (although this looks OK) 2andgt; The musician at left is missing her flute; 3andgt; This clock was recently cleaned and is running strongly, but the repairman fitted an incorrect pendulum which we have replaced with the proper ST pendulum. However, now the suspension leader is incorrect. (easily changed). The porcelain dial is properly signed and with minor scratches; minute hand incorrectly replaced with a French hand. The rosewood veneered case with a nice old finish is in exceptionally nice condition with a couple of minor veneer chips on the base and just below the right column. The original painted dial, that is very nice for a Seth Thomas, has some flaking along the bottom and around the winding holes. The tablet, which is unusual, appears to be original; no evidence of replacement. The movement is marked “Plymouth Hollow” which would make this a crossover clock, assembled just after the Civil War. It looks as good in person as it does in the foto. Height 25 inches

The face is silvered metal and shows only a few signs of age. It is marked ‘Made by Seth Thomas in USA’. The bezel and glass are also in good condition. The glass is beveled and curved. This clock has the large separate movement to run the chimes. It strikes the traditional Westminster chimes on the quarter, half and hour on four rods. The movement is marked with the ST logo, ‘Made in USA’ and the number 119. There is also a small label on the back of the case that reads ‘J.B. Van Sciver Co. Camden, N.J.’. This is a large clock, standing 15 inches high, 10 inches wide and 7 inches deep. The clock is in good running order.
