C.1894, Seth Thomas Clock Co., LUNAR, 8-day time and strike wall clock in oak.
Condition: the small oak veneered panel is missing from its framed opening. The embossed pendulum is from a school clock and ‘close but no cigar’ as a match. The case has been refinished. There are 2 holes bottom rt and left drilled for screwing the case to the wall. The wooden support behind the movement is replaced. The moon dial, dial, hands and weights are original; minor paint loss to dial. For reference, see Ly’s book on Seth Thomas, 3rd Edition, page 320. Ly price guide if original = $3750. Height 41 inches

Seth Thomas Clock Co. hanging clock, the “Lunar”, ca 1892.
This clock has the same movement as the “Jupiter”. It is an 8 day lyre shape with an extension on the top that hold the hammer that strikes the large cup bell on the hours, and it supports the moon phase dial that orbits behind the time dial. The movement is powered by the two special grooved weights. The clock is wound by pulling down on the center chains. This clock also has a decorative cast pendulum bob with a wood stick, original chains, door lock and winding key, original signed dial that has had some old and minor restoration, and the correct pair of hands. The mahogany case is 41″ high and 20″ wide, all original but the wood was polished and rubbed giving it a nice sheen. We recently had the movement cleaned and serviced. The books say this model first appeared in the ST catalogs in 1894, but our clock has a factory stamp on the back “2981A”, or January 1892. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 319-320. Booked for $3750 five years ago. This is only our 3rd Lunar in over 30 years of selling thousands of clocks.

the old finish is in good condition, but the lower portion of the case is absent and has been partially replaced by the scrolled piece that formerly was on the front of the base. The top scrolls have some age cracks, visible only from the top. The metal dial is repainted, the moon dial now is new paper, and striking is on a coil gong, not on a bell as described in Ly. The lyre plate movement, with ladder chains, is correctly signed and retains the wheels for advancing the moon dial. The fluted weights and cast pendulum bob look correct. Ht 29.5″

Original finish mahogany case, 41 inches high. Dial, moon dial, glass, hands, pendulum and weights old and original. 8- day two weight driven movement strikes a cathedral bell. This clock was in storage about 25 years, the movement needs to be cleaned and serviced. The Lunar model is getting a little harder to purchase in mahogany; they are usually oak. Seth Thomas contemporary clock resembling the earlier “Lunar” model.
This is a 3 weight clock striking 8 rods on the quarters and hours. Chain pull up 8 day movement is running well. Full label with instructions on the back. The clock was made after 1970 when they merged with the Talley Industries, and before 1982 when the company moved from Thomaston, Conn. to Georgia. Cherrycase is 32″ high plus the pendulum and weights hanging below. Full door infront plus the whole top comes off like the bonnet of a tall clock. Nearmint clock except for tiny scrapes on the weights and pendulum, not worthmentioning really. A lot of clock for this minimum, and very very heavy.

C.1909, Seth Thomas Clock Co., “LUNAR” in old oak and in good condition.
These clocks turn up from time to time but often in a state of distress. This one has had the dial professionally repainted, and it is exactly correct and as it should be. The finish on the case is original , with minor nicks and scrapes commensurate with its age. Now Seth Thomas in their catalog lists this clock as 41 inches, however, that dimension includes the weights hanging below the case; the case itself is only 36″. Two weight movement is complete and sound; clock ticks and strikes. Pendulum is in box with weights & finial.

the ornate case retains its original finish, and original hard-to-find fancy pendulum bob. On the metal dial, some numerals have been repainted by an amateur, there is a crack in the top corner of the thick beveled glass, and the hour hand has been repaired. The signed movement, with its ladder chains and ribbed weights, all are fine. Ht 41″
