Seth Thomas, “10 Inch Drop Octagon”, ca 1912.

The number “12” is stamped on the back of the case, I say it was made 1912. This clock was made in several styles and sizes, this one in old oak, polished, in near perfect original condition, standing 22.5 inches high. 10 inches painted metal dial still with original paint. Compared to other Seth Thomas dials this old, I will call it near perfect. Has an original set of hands, old pendulum, and brass bezel, knob, etc. are all excellent. The movement is 8 day, time only, and runs up a storm. Since there is no strike you can put it in the guest bedroom. If you only have a few clocks this should be your next purchase because it is near perfect and dependable. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 506.

Seth Thomas “Drop Octagon, 10 Inch”, C. 1914.

Crusty, original walnut case, 21.5″, gold stripe around octagon bezel and lower door. Gold is still good. The case is not bad enough to refinish or remove the crazing. A light cleaning with one of the many cleaners available would be all I would do. The factory production date is on the back. 8 day, time only, large movement. Very nice label inside the case. It has a new dial pan and dial, otherwise original, and running. Ly-Seth Thomas #520.

Seth Thomas “Drop Octagon, 10 Inch”, C. 1924.

Another beautiful case, this one old oak, 21.5″ high and refinished to perfection. This gentleman has been collecting clocks for 40 years and no doubt had these near perfect cases a long time. I don’t see them around the clock regionals, auctions, or anywhere except in the collections of the oldtimers. 8 day movement is time only, clean, and running strong. Polished pendulum bob, bezel and rings. New paper label on the back, good old glasses, original dial with some black marks make by sweaty fingers turning the hands. Ly-Seth Thomas #520.

Seth Thomas "10 inch Drop octagon", we usually call them "school house" or "short drop" clocks.

Seth Thomas “10 inch Drop octagon”, we usually call them “school house” or “short drop” clocks.

This one was probably made in the 1920’s of mahogany veneer. The veneer has been cleaned, not refinished, and some small patches or stain has been used where the veneer had been bumped or chipped, nothing real serious. The 2 piece zinc dial has been professionally repainted and that also is typical of Seth dials. There is a good full label, correct pendulum and hands, 8 day pendulum movement that strikes a coil gong on the hours, running really well. Not a perfect clock by any stretch, but it is not a bad example of the 10 Inch drop. Ly-Seth Thomas #520.

Seth Thomas “10 Inch Drop Octagon Gilt”, ca 1898, and so stamped on the back of the case.

Made of mahogany veneer, polished and with gilt lines around top and base, now hardly visible at all. You can see an outline where gilt used to be but years of handling and cleaning has obliterated most. Case is 21.5 inches high, very clean and still polished, top glass replaced, bottom original, full label, original pendulum, dial, and hands. Factory stamp on the back indicates the clock was made Jan. 1898. You will note the name printed on the dial, “T.W. Potter, Kensington”, which I suppose is England. All black on the dial has been highlighted; I would bet was done by Mr. Potter. 8 day timepiece, running well. Ly-Seth Thomas #506.

The Seth Thomas “Milan” clock, a notable addition to the esteemed City Series, dates back to approximately 1900. This exquisite timepiece is distinguished by its polished dark mahogany cabinet case, adorned with intricate hand carvings on the sides and base. The clock’s unique charm lies in its untouched condition, exhibiting a light crazing that attests to its never having been cleaned.

One minor discrepancy is the absence of four thin wooden feet, otherwise, the clock remains remarkably well-preserved. Seth Thomas Clock Co. a rare City Series clock, “Milan”, ca 1900.

I collected City Series clocks for 30 years and never acquired this model. This clock is magnificent, a polished dark mahogany cabinet case with hand carvings on the sides and base. It is covered with a light crazing, meaning it has never been cleaned. Only one negative, the four thin wood pieces (feet) have been removed, otherwise the clock is near perfect. It has a beveled glass in the French sash, brass mat, porcelain dial, and original hands. The perfect porcelain dial is signed. Hinged wood back door, correct pendulum and key, standing Cathedral gong, and a round 8 day movement that is signed and running. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 559, and the movement is pictured at No. 1684.

This City Series clock is one of four small cased clocks named for cities in the Mediterranean area, the others being Mentone, Genoa, and Lisbon. This polished, dark mahogany case is only 10.25″ high, with hand carvings on the front. Basically a sound and original case, just a couple of bites on the 2 bottom carvings, not real serious. One piece porcelain dial is excellent, signed, correct hands, French Sash with beveled glass. Glass flaked in the hinge area. 8 day round movement, signed by Seth Thomas, half hour strike on a standing Cathedral gong. A good City Series clock we rarely see. Ly-Seth Thomas #198.
