This is a large beehive case that stands 18 1/2 inches high. Fine figured mahogany wood is clean, polished, and in near perfect condition. Dial is silver with recessed numerals, slightly soiled, but with little wear. Bowed and beveled glass. Chime-Silent lever on the side. The chime movement is marked “90A”, the running movement “89N”. The movements are clean and running. Ly-Seth Thomas No.691, 693, 696, 697.

Ship’s bell clock with eight-day movement.

Seth Thomas Clock Company has been making ship’s clocks for many years. Present-day collectors seem to be asking for them with a passion. This one was named THE HELMSMAN by Seth Thomas and was made around 1936 with a 4″ silvered dial having both 12 hour numerals and the 24 hour ring as well. The bells strike the ships bell watch system starting with 8 bells at noon and then one bell at 12:30, two bells at 1:00 PM; three bells at 2:00 PM and so forth until eight bells are again reached at 4:00 PM after which the sequence starts again. Eight bells sound at 12; 4 and 8. There are some minor pits in the brass case which can’t really be noticed as the clock sits on the shelf or desk. The movement was recently cleaned in a clock shop and the case retains original finish in outstanding condition. Very minor wear to porcelain dial around winding holes; otherwise excellent. A great clock for the beginning collector. Height 83/4″

Seth Thomas 100 year old reissue, the “Yorktown”, ca 1905.

Resembling in every way the carved case clocks made by many clockmakers in the mid 1800’s, Seth Thomas sold a number of carved half column, carved splat, clocks. Some were weight powered, some spring such as this model. Interestingly the full label on the backboard, is overpasted with the Seth Thomas label, leading me to wonder if the clocks were not made by another maker. I cannot find any references about the Putnam and Yorktown in the Bulletins. The movement is 8 day, striking a cathedral gong. Gong base and pendulum bob are brass. Mahogany veneered case is 36 inches high, never cleaned, minor veneer chipping around the bottom, excellent carved splat, half columns, and paw feet. Metal dial pan is 12 inch square, paint very satisfactory, and signed by Seth Thomas. Great painted tablet with some flaking of the blue border. Inner scene of village, church, children, etc. is not flaking. Key lock door. Ly-Seth Thomas #1000.
