  • Antique Seth Thomas “Office No. 6” Model Clock

About the Seth Thomas “Office No. 6” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Office No. 6” clock, produced around 1909-1913, is an antique American timepiece that showcases the craftsmanship of the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company. This 36-inch mahogany or oak case clock boasts a potentially original dark finish and features an old dial with painted numbers, both glasses, and a time-and-strike movement that runs smoothly for eight days, striking on a wire gong.

The clock’s design includes an etched top and base, which adds a touch of elegance to its otherwise plain appearance. The original red mahogany finish on the case has never been cleaned or refinished, maintaining its aged character with visible crazing on the wood. Some listings suggest that the glasses may not be original, while others indicate that the dial was repainted to resemble an original design found in books.

The Seth Thomas “Office No. 6” clock was marketed as a competitive alternative to store regulators and shop clocks produced by other manufacturers. The company offered the option of removing the etched top if a plainer case was preferred, making it versatile for various settings. Despite its age, this antique timepiece remains in good condition, with some minor wear and tear that adds to its unique charm.

Jul 2021 – #63 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office No. 6”, ca. 1913. A 36-inch mahogany case with a dark and possibly original finish. Both glasses are old, as is the painted dial and dial board. The Seth Thomas time-and-strike movement is dirty but runs without problem, 8 days, striking on a wire gong. A dark label inside on the bottom. This model came as time-only, time-and-strike, and with a calendar. ST advertised that the top could be removed if you wanted a plainer case. The only thing that keeps this from being excellent is the fact that someone lightly varnished over the entire case giving it a syruppy look (original finish in intact beneath, and some 4 ought steel wool would take this off with some patient rubbing). As the catalog states, the top may be removed if a “Plain Case is Preferred”. This clock sold for 8 dollars in 1910. Retains original, dial, hands, movement, finish and metal index inside bottom of case. Also with original label inside, that has been varnished over like the rest of the case. No doubt made by ST to compete with the poplar store regulators and shop clocks made by the other clock makers. They said in their ad, “Top can be taken off if a plainer case is preferred”.The Office No. 6 with the etched top and base was a little fancier than theIngraham or Sessions comparable cases. ST priced their No. 6 to be competitivewith the other companyÕs store regulators. Today the ST No. 6 will sell fortwice as much as the competitions comparable clocks. They also made the sameclock with a simple calendar. This old oak case has the original crusty finish, case is 36″ high. Movement is 8 day time only; 12″ dial has a little flaking.Runs very strong, has a good label inside, original pendulum. Lacking onlythe brass dial ring to complete the clock. C.1895, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Queen Anne, 8-day time/strike wall clock, case incomplete.

The walnut case is in good condition with original finish, however, the clock must have fallen at one time and damaged the lower bracket, which is now missing, but the bottom trim molding was saved and placed back on the case. This clock was originally exported to England and the painted dial is signed “Barry and Sons, Cardiff”. The clock has a beautiful nickel-plated damascened pendulum. This example has an early wooden beat indicator. There is a very nice label in the bottom of the case. If this clock had retained its original bracket it would have been worth $1,000 and the estimate reflects the condition. Height 31.75Ó $500-$700

Jan 2022 – #100 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 25”, This model came in two sizes, 32 inches and 37 inches; this is the larger version. The case is “Flemish oak” with simple carvings but a bright geometric pattern door glass. Both glasses are old, the tablet repainted by Lee Davis. The dial holds the original paint but is in bad shape and has been touched up extensively. The hands are correct. These clocks are best known for having been used in the 47 Harvey House restaurants along the Santa Fe railroad. There is no indication that this clock was one of those clocks, but I have not seen any with restaurant labeling, so… Horton’s sold one in 2019 for $1500. $1200-$1600. • Antique Seth Thomas “Richmond VP” Model Clock

About the Seth Thomas “Richmond VP” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Richmond VP” clock, produced around 1880 by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company, is a noteworthy addition to any collector’s mantel or shelf. In its first iteration, this 30-hour time and strike model features a striped walnut case that, while clean, lacks its original finish. The dial has been repainted, with the hands remaining original. The tablet is authentic, albeit with some loss, and the door latch exhibits a defect. Standing at approximately 13.5 inches tall, this clock showcases the craftsmanship of the Seth Thomas Clock Company during its heyday in Thomaston, Connecticut.

A second version of the “Richmond VP” was also produced around the same time as an 8-day time/strike/alarm City Series shelf clock. This model boasts a refinished rosewood veneered case in good condition. The original dial has been repainted, but the chapter ring is smaller than its original size, making the numerals appear too small. Replacement hands are available for this clock. The bottom tablet remains original, and while the original gilding on the door molding has worn off, the movement within is authentic and signed. Standing at approximately 18.25 inches tall, this version of the “Richmond VP” offers a unique blend of historical charm and collectible appeal.
