Catalog Description: Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1”, ca 1875. This clock is 8 day, one weight descending down the middle of the case behind a partition that slides up and down. Some of this model have labels on the sliding partition, this one doesn’t and not sure there ever was one. Great original painted glass has been rebacked to hold the very nice gold paint. Original old zinc dial has been repainted. The 34-inch mahogany or rosewood veneer case has survived extremely well with hardly any chips. There are some scrapes or scuffs from hauling, etc. but should cover with “Nu Life” polish. The 8 day movement is rectangle and almost identical to the later No. 2 movements. It is like the movement shown at Ly-Seth Thomas No.368. The movement is held by mounting blocks and was used in some of the early No. 2 regulators. Original flat iron weight, old brass pendulum. The clock, glass, and everything, is identical to the one pictured in Ly-Seth Thomas No.354.

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1″, C. 1860-1863. This is probably one of the first regulator clocks made by Seth Thomas. He purchased the bankrupt stock of Silas B. Terry in 1859 and began construction of his own line of regulators, this being the first. The round movement could well have been one of Silas B. Terry’s stock or made with the patterns and machinery purchased from him. It is very rare to find this movement in the Seth Thomas early regulators. Note how the weight is compounded in the top of the case using two pulleys, plus a third pulley holding the weight. Some restoration is needed to put the case back to original condition. The base will need to be made, order a seconds hand from Timesavers, and have the glass painted. There is no evidence that this case ever had a sliding partition separating the pendulum and weight and on which a label was placed. Instead there is a paper beat scale built into a small shelf on the door, and a label was put in the base. We believe the good zinc dial, bob, gold painted stick, and the flat weight, to be original to the clock. The case would be 34” if the base were in place. Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 107-109, movement and case pictured.

Catalog Description: C.1880, Seth Thomas, Regulator No. 1, in a rosewood case, and with round movement and front hung pendulum. Condition: although the dial has been restored over the original surface and bare spots filled in, the Dial House could improve this dial for $150, also the holes in the dial have been enlarged for some reason, although it is original to the case. The balance of the clock, tablet, veneer, pendulum and weight are in original good+ condition; some minor veneer abrasions and edge wear commensurate with the age of the clock. Best part is a nice original ST label and a great retailers label from The American Clock Co.,581 Broadway, NY. Catalog Description: C.1875, Seth Thomas Clock, “Regulator No. 1 Extra, Striking”, 8-day, 2-weight wall clock in very good condition. This nicely refinished rosewood veneered case is attractive, although sealer was not used and the grain is a bit open. There is a little raised veneer on a couple of small spots on the dial bezel and a small chip on one bezel joint. The numerals have been restored over the original surface, and some touch-up around winding holes by the Dial House, and the dial is very nice. (Camera has accentuated spots which are not visible in natural light). The hands and pendulum with gilt rod are original. The painted tablet has been restored on the original glass. The case has an excellent label. This clock came from the Frank Grosso collection several years ago. It is in good running order. For details on this model, and photos of the unique Terry style movement, see Tran Duy Ly’s book titled Seth Thomas Clocks, (1996), page 108. Height 44 inches

Catalog Description: C.1875, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Regulator No. 1, in walnut, with restoration. This early model has the cord up over a pulley in the top of the case and the weight falls invisibly down the right side. The hands, pendulum and weight are original; the dial was professionally repainted around 40 years ago and looks original. There is a very nice gilt and black glass in the lower door, which was removed when the case was refinished, and is now held in with nails; it is quite old and was probably installed by the dealer when the clock was new. Note weight cord falls over top pulley, no additional pulley is used. 37 inches

Catalog Description: C.1870, Seth Thomas, “Regulator No. 1, Extra, Striking”, as-found, in need of work. See also lot 363 in this catalog; the striking model is truly uncommon and it is a surprise to have 2 of this model on offer. This one does need some attention: the case has been stripped and could use some more finish (the rosewood veneer is good with some small chips), the bottom of the clock is missing. The dial has been repainted with numerals a bit too bold. There are NO weights, no baffle, no beat scale and tablet is incorrect. Hands are original. For details on this model, and photos of the unique Terry style movement, see Tran Duy Ly’s book titled Seth Thomas Clocks, (1996), page 108. Height 38 inches

Note the influence that Silas Terry had on this model; see next lot. Height 36 inches
