  • Antique Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 15” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: C.1880, Seth Thomas, “Regulator No. 15″ longcase clock in walnut and burled veneers in very good original condition. The 14” silvered dial has rubbed to brass over the years, and it would be easier to read if it were silvered. The mercury with the clock only fills around a third to half the thumb print jar, but it seems to keep time at that level. Otherwise this is a great clock, with original finish, weight, pendulum, hangers, hardware and so forth. The movement in the 15 is among the finest that Seth Thomas produced, with fine cut pinions, Graham escapement, robust pillars, and venier beat adjustment. This case has glass sides with counter framing like the finest regulators; it is really an imposing and impressive piece. Height 100 inches ( tallcase, grandfather )

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 14” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Regulator No. 14”, ca 1879. Well, it sure looks identical to the picture of the No.14. A very good cabinetmaker decided he wanted a floor clock like the Seth No.14, and he made it. This clock is 97 inches high, made of walnut and burl walnut veneer. The clock is nice enough for my house and I have seen the day I would have given anything for a clock this nice, but to be honest, if I were going to keep it I would have a good cabinetmaker spend some time sanding and rubbing to get a little slicker finish. On close examination you can see that it is not slick like the Seth Thomas factory would have made. There is a door lock, 4 side glasses, and the large door glass. The top is removable for easier moving. The movement is fastened to an iron bracket. There are no markings on the movement, dial, or pendulum. They are not old nor are they new. The previous owner says he owned it 30 years and I would guess the movement and case to be 30 to 50 years old. It is 8 day with sweep second hand, Graham dead beat escapement, maintaining power, 1 large brass weight, and a very heavy gridiron pendulum. The great looking dial has etched designs allover, silver dial ring, and raised brass numerals. My guess is they all came together when the clock was made. Today I don’t think you could buy a new movement, dial, and pendulum this nice. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 200. An original No.14 would cost you over 20,000 dollars today. My estimate .

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 Extra” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 Extra”, ca 1860. These early regulators used the SB Terry round, 8 day, time only movements I would think this case would have had a Plymouth Hollow label originally Some restoration has been done from time to time The sliding partitions were removed from many of these early clocks because the pendulum and weight are very difficult to hang if the partition is in place This partition and label are modern replacements The top glass has been replaced but the important one with the gold paint, is near perfect Like most all Seth Thomas dials, this one has been professionally repainted No doubt some veneering has been done but the false graining is excellent and makes it almost impossible to see any veneer repairs The flat weight that descends behind the partition is a good replica of the early ones 41 inch rosewood veneer case has a special key lock on the bottom door

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 Extra” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 Extra”, ca 1860. The round movement was either purchased from the creditors of Silas B. Terry in 1859, or made from the patterns purchased at the same time. The round 8 day, time only movements were used a short time before they went to the rectangle movements. The old zinc dial pan is original and has been professionally repainted. The gold around the glass and the gold painted wood stick, brass bob, and glasses, are also original. The sliding partition where a label should be has been added. It looks fine, hides the descending weight, but nonetheless there is no label. Rosewood veneer case like 99% of the octagon bezel clocks has had some minor repairs and I notice one small chigger bite that should be stained or a tiny piece of veneer put on. The base is a remake, well done, veneered to match. The catalogs say this model clock should be 44 inch. I have probably had 20 over the years, none were over 41.5 inch, same as this one. Large flat iron weight descends behind the partition Clock is running. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 108-109.

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 Extra” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 – Extra”, C. 1865. Rosewood veneer case is 41.5″ high, where the early catalogs touted them as 44″. The veneer is almost perfect, especially when compared to a dozen or so others I have sold, and the large number I have seen other places. There is a small nick on the right side of the bezel and some loose veneer on the base. You wouldn’t know it unless you carry the clock, then you feel it. This case inside and out is almost clean enough to say it has never been on the wall. No coal or tobacco smoke inside or out. The large 14.5″ zinc dial was repainted at least 50 years ago. The black paper label and white paper beat scale that are glued to the sliding partition, are the best I have ever seen. The tablet is original but the black paint has some re-backing. The gold always seems to hold to the glass. The round eight day movement is attributed to S. B. Terry. Seth Thomas continued to make them after they bought Terry’s old stock. The original flat iron weight descends down the middle of the case behind the sliding partition. Wood pendulum rod has the original gold, while the old bob got in the hands of an overenthusiastic polisher. Most of the brass has been buffed off leaving the copper undercoat. It isn’t the end of the world, but honestly is about the only negative thing I can say about this clock. Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 108-109.

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: C.1870, Seth Thomas, Regulator No. 1-Extra, single weight timepiece in rosewood, 8-day. Condition: the rosewood veneer is still exceptional on this particular clock; the original finish over-coated to fill in some minor blemishes. The dial was professionally repainted in 1977. The inside of the case with the ink stamp impression of John Tanner of California; although it has changed hands since, it was part of his collection at one time. The original gold leaf tablet with some minor re-backing. For reference, see Tran Ly’s book on Seth Thomas, 3rd Edition [2004], page 272. Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: C.1870, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Regulator No. 1 Extra, time only, in rosewood. The veneer is in wonderful condition with no visible veneer damage, although some is loose, and minor loss on rear of bottom bracket so be careful how you pick it up. Both glasses are original. The dial, hands, pendulum and iron weight are original. The tablet has a great spider web of background, some paint loss, and some small losses to the gold. Best part is the superior label on weight baffle. Cord needs replacing. An extra nice example. Height 44 inches

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas, “Regulator No. 1″, C. 1875. Rosewood veneered case is 34” tall and in above average condition. The dial bezel is usually the place that has veneer problems. It has a place or two where the veneer was loose and glued back, a few small areas where the veneer is missing, but no visible repairs. They sanded those places, stained them, and are hardly noticeable. The edges are rough in a few places but overall the veneer looks real good There are a couple of places on the base where the edges were nicked, but for its age the clock is as good or better than you will find anywhere. Other good points; a complete and near perfect, black and gold label, including the paper beat scale at the bottom, on the sliding partition that separates the pendulum from the weight chute; an almost perfect tablet painting, with just a smidgen of paint loss. The original dial was apparently repainted years ago. The dial is attached to a circle of wood consisting of 9 pie shaped wood pieces. For whatever reason, one of the nine was replaced, of course it is under the dial and you can’t see it. The hands are correct replacements. The movement is 8 day, weight driven, time only with rectangular solid plates, maintaining power, and a Graham dead beat escapement. The pendulum bob appears to be original although was originally nickel plated, now brass colored. The stick is a very old replacement and the stick hanger a very well made replacement. The flat weight no doubt came with the movement. We have sold a few of these over the years and haven’t had any that were nicer. Ly-Seth Thomas #354.
