• Antique Seth Thomas “Parma” Model Clock

About the Seth Thomas “Parma” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Parma” clock, produced by the Seth Thomas Clock Company around 1909, is a classic mantel clock with an inlaid mahogany case. This model, known for its height of 12 inches, showcases a porcelain dial and original hands. The condition of these clocks can vary, ranging from excellent restored examples, where the brass trim has been polished and the case refinished, to those found in poor condition with damages such as a broken minute hand, chipped veneer, or a damaged dial.

Another version of the “Parma” clock, also produced around 1905, features an 8-day time and strike mechanism. This model’s case is made from mahogany with inlay, and while it appears to have a later finish, it retains original hands and a signed movement. The dial of this version has some chips, and there are rough edges on the front of the case in a few places.

Lastly, another “Parma” clock from around 1913 showcases refinished mahogany with inlay in generally good condition, although there is some damage on the edge of the case near two and twelve o’clock. The original porcelain dial has chips at the right side winding hole, but overall, it is clean, running, and in good condition. Each of these Seth Thomas “Parma” clocks offers a unique opportunity for collectors to own a piece of American clockmaking history.

Seth Thomas, “Parlor Calendar No. 5”, ca Jan 1884, and so stamped on the case.

The relatively small, 20 inches polished walnut veneer case, contains the same two large movements that are found in the much bigger cases. The upper movement, signed by Seth Thomas, is 8 day, strikes a bell on the hours. The lower calendar movement, also by Seth Thomas, is perpetual, meaning you make no adjustments for length of months or for leap year. The clock is all original including the dials, hands, and pendulum. It ran for us during the brief time we did the catalog work, but I would recommend it be serviced. Ly-Calendar, page 260.

Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar No. 5”, ca 1886.

Excellent 20 inch walnut case. Polished and well preserved. 8 day movement strikes a brass bell on the hours; it is running and changing the calendar. Label on the door indicates the clock was first sold and calendar set to run on “July 1st, 1878”, which makes it even older than the catalogs indicate. The instruction label tells you how to set the calendar. Another full label inside the case just cautions you not to oil the calendar. The old paper dials have been on there for a coonÕs age, are worn and mottled. I thought Seth Thomas dials were always painted on zinc, so I will say these paper dials arenÕt original. Seth Thomas calendar clock, “Parlor Calendar, No. 5”, C. 1886.

Polished walnut veneer case is 20″ high, and there are no problems with the case. In fact very nice. However, we need to send Bubba to the NAWCC Suitcase School. The top dial pan is original, no new holes, but the paper dial he put on is pretty sorry. Even worse is the new pan over the calendar mechanism, and that paper dial. Probably for $100 he could have made this a first rate shelf calendar clock. And, as anyone can see the red calendar hand is bad. At least he could have painted it black. You can get a correct replacement hand from Timesavers for about $4. There is a label behind the calendar movement. This is an 8 day movement, No. 4 3/8, striking a bell on the hours. Geneva locks are still in place. Ly-Seth Thomas #94.

Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar No. 5”, ca 1886.

There is an awfully lot of stuff in this very small 20 inches high walnut case. Notice how close the dials are to the top and base. Behind those dials are oodles of working mechanisms. Large signed 8 day movement strikes a brass bell on each hour. Good label of instructions inside behind the lower movement. Calendar mechanism is changing properly and the clock is keeping accurate time. The case has the original finish and appears to have led a sheltered existence. Clean underneath, inside and out-side. The glasses are both original. A very small nail hole and a chip on the top back edge of the case. Not even noticeable. Once in a great while we find Seth Thomas dials that have not been repainted, such is the case here. Only the pendulum bob is not original. Ly-Seth Thomas #94.

Usually this clock with all the veneered bezels and rolling edges, will have a lot of veneer problems. These bezels are near perfect except for a tiny tic on the top. The left side of the base has a couple of tics and the bottom trim below the dial is ragged all across, about 8 inches of problems. The case is actually very nice and I wouldn’t worry about any veneer repair. Color has mellowed with age.The only change or repair I see on the clock is the door lock. Bubba attempted to install one and failed, leaving a couple of unnecessary screw holes, inside, behind the door, which we repaired and then installed a correct lock.Dials are flaking. Antique Seth Thomas Parlor Calendar No. 3 Clock

Jan 2021 – 135 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar No. 3”, 1878. Perhaps the most common of the parlor calendars, this model is only 27 inches tall in a walnut veneer and is spring-driven. The veneer on this case is very good but not perfect, with considerable chipping on the rounded surfaces including the bezels and curved top. The glasses are old and the painted dials are chipping. The hands are correct. The white instruction label on the back of the door shows that this clock was completed in late 1878. The signed 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running and striking on a brass bell, and the calendar is advancing. Horton’s sold one in 2017 for $350.

Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Parlor Calendar No. 1”, ca 1884.

The largest of the mantle or Parlor calendar clocks at just a tad over 34 inches, the catalogs say they are 33 inches? Label on the door indicates this particular clock was sold and put to running on January 1st, 1877, which was immediately after they were granted the patent to an improved calendar mechanism. Seth then discontinued the Mix Brothers mechanism. This large mahogany veneered case has survived 117 cold winters and hot summers without the veneer or woodcracking and peeling. There are a few tiny veneer chips, sure not anything to worry about. The graining and burl on the front is just outstanding. The old paper dials are still on the original zinc pans. There is a full label on the door, another full label inside, a pendulum and 2 weights, all correct for this model. The movement is 8 day, strikes a coil gong on the hours. Seth Thomas, "Parlor Calendar No. 1", C. 1884.

Seth Thomas, “Parlor Calendar No. 1”, C. 1884.

Rosewood case is 33″ high, 17″ wide, generally very nice condition from the bottom to the rounded top where some veneer is lost, and would be unusual if there weren’t some loss there. What is surprising is there is no loss on the base and bezels. The top corners of the case have had repairs and the case has been refinished. The dials were repainted without stripping off the old paint. It is fine and only noticeable upon close inspection. An excellent full label on the door is covered with plastic to preserve it. The two old weights look correct, pendulum is a replacement, and hands look correct. It takes a special key to open the door. There is a key with it, but not original to the clock. The signed lyre movement is 8 day, weight, gong strike, and it is running. This is a lot of clock for a low minimum. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 46, Millers “Calendar Clocks”, page 11.
