    Jan 2021 – 134 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar”, ca. 1863. One of Seth Thomas’s earliest shelf calendar models, this one made prior to 1865 as judged by the Plymouth Hollow label and stamp on the movement. There are many places where the rosewood veneer is lost, reglued, or repaired on this angled 30.5-inch case. Both glasses are old, the center tablet is as shown in the catalog illustration and is on old glass. The painted metal dials are certainly original and have been touched up extensively; the hands are correct. There is a card label on the back of the door with instructions to set up and run and a very nice and complete label on the back wall. The movement is running and striking on the wire gong, driven by two large iron weights; the calendar weekday roller is advancing but the date hand needs adjustment. All in all, this is a pretty good example. sold one in 2018 for $750.

    This is a very early shelf calendar model, with 8 day movement that strikes a gong. Calendar mechanism is perpetual. Lyre movement is mounted on a seat board like many early clocks and is powered by 2 large round weights.Rosewood case is 30 1/2 inches, working door lock with key, 2 large full labels both “Plymouth Hollow”. 2 old repainted zinc dials. The middle glass is original and very pretty, but a break in the upper left corner. I sure wouldn’t replace it. This case with its many beveled edges, around the glasses, door edges, top, base, and sides, has remarkably good veneer. Surely there have been repairs. If they were, they were expertly done. This is an exceptional example of an early calendar clock. Ly-Seth Thomas No.90, No.103.

    in generally good condition. Someone has stripped the finish off and given it a light coat of dull varnish; there are minor bits of veneer missing; the top dial is replaced, and the bottom dial is original with minor flakes. Door lock is present but damaged. Both the rear label and the instruction label are clear and legible; eagle center tablet is superb (32 star US flag). Calendar mechanism is sound and the rollers are original. Overall good+ condition and worthy of your attention. Height 30 inches

    in restored condition. The case has been refinished with varnish and rubbed out with steel wool and really is quite attractive. There are some veneer repairs, blended in well with the new finish. Retains original backboard label, instruction label and super eagle tablet (with some flaking). The dials appear to be have been reblacked (nice job), and this is a good looking clock.     These early calendars are hard to find with the veneer intact; and except for a couple of chips (at top), this veneer is quite nice. The dials have been repainted (without brand and patent info); calendar hand replaced improperly. The interior labels are both good, except that the instruction label has had a hole cut in it at the bottom to reveal pendulum motion (see close up). Lastly, someone cut two holes in the rear of the case to facilitate adjusting the calendar rods. Original “eagle and flag” tablet is still bright; rollers are original (and dark). Height 30″ Worth $1500 if perfect. Reserve $800

    Rosewood veneered case in an old finish with some veneer loss at the top edge. The veneer on the flat area of the base has been replaced with what looks to be walnut veneer. Original time dial has a fair amount of paint loss. Calendar dial has paint loss as well. Hands and tablet are original. Paper on the calendar rollers looks to have been replaced. Ht 30 1/2″

    There are veneer chips and some loss along the base and chips along the top of the case. The upper dial has been papered over while the lower is original with some paint loss at the 2 o’clock position. The door glasses are original with the center glass being especially nice; usually we see an eagle tablet in this model; this “globe” tablet with locomotive and sailing ship is exceptional. Instruction label for this double dial clock is bright and legible. Height 30 1/2″

The tablet is backed with an original Plymouth Hollow label inside the case. The upper door glass is original and the lower may be replaced. The hands all appear original.

    The rosewood veneer on this clock is very nice condition with veneer chips and loss on the base and a couple of chips on the top. The calendar dial has some very minor paint flaking, while the top dial is excellent. All three glasses are original. The center tablet has some loss in the shields and minor flaking of the black background, but is in otherwise very fine condition. The calendar hand is a replacement. There is a very clean label in the case and on the back of the door. Height 30.5 inches

    Jan 2020 – 65 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Paris”, 1895. Good grief, I searched through over 3,000 Seth Thomas clocks on the Antique Clocks Price Guide before I found a match for this clock; one sold at Schmitt’s in 2003 for $360. It is the only sale on Antique Clocks Price Guide. You will not find this model in either of Ly’s latest volumes on Seth Thomas clocks, but Kyle Kenyon tells me it is shown in Ly’s 1996 edition. It is 15.5 inches tall in an imitation marble adamantine finish, with imprinted black scrollwork on the front. It is embellished with gilt ornaments across the top and bottom; the giltwork is remarkably well preserved, as is the adamantine; I see only one spot to the right of the dial where the adamantine has cracked. on the top finial is not quite as well preserved. The signed porcelain dial sits in a brass bezel behind a convex glass; there is a hairline and a repair near the 11. There is a signed, round movement with an external count wheel; it strikes on a cathedral It is running and striking as required, on the hours and half-hours. There is no label (there are two jeweler’s repair labels) but the bottom is stenciled with the date of manufacture, which confirmed to me that it was a Seth Thomas clock. Hence, the hunt through Antique Clocks Price Guide to find a name. Based on the sale in 2003 I would expect this to sell for between $150 and $250.

    This French style clock with adamantine veneer and gilt mountings is in excellent condition, exceptions noted. The front panel shows a little crazing in one area, possibly from the sun. There is a little chip on the black adamantine on one top back corner. The bezel glass is missing; been gone a long time and the embossed brass dial has gone dark. The hands are original. The movement is complete and sound, properly signed and the pendulum is original. The clock strikes on a spiral steel gong. These “French” models do not turn up often. Height 16 inches

There are some thin plastic spacers glued to the back of the dial mask that may have been done to move the dial forward slightly as it is a little concave and probably interfered with the pendulum.     The case retains its original finish. The original painted dial has some minor in-painting. The hands are original. The movement is signed. The case back is dated 1888. The nickel plated pendulum bob is nicely damascened The door glass is original. This clock came to us from England and dial retains the original retailers info (Allis, 10 Wine St, Bristol). Dial paint has been over-coated with matt lacquer to stabilize.

    The factory stamped the back of this case with the date the clock was made, “8881A”, which was Seth’s secret code for January 1888. This fine clock was made of the best walnut, is 30″ high, and has been rubbed to a furniture shine, which I prefer. I know some of you do not; you want the old crusty look. The movement is 8 day, striking a Cathedral gong on the hours. This is a living room or den clock, not a basement or garage clock. The size is right to hang the clock almost anywhere, and the gong is very pleasing and doesn’t sound like a fire truck coming down the street. The dial rings and gong stand are nickel, the beat indicator and old bob are brass. There are a few unexplained nicks in the bob. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 475.

    Partially refinished walnut case has remains of original finish in very nice condition. There is a dark area on the bottom left molding just below the door that may have been exposed to a heat source that may has caused a dark and worn surface. Painted dial looks original with a repair in the center and the winding arbors. Original hands. Original damascene pendulum with some loss to the nickel plating. Dark label in the bottom of the case.

    Condition: on the top trim right and left of center, an inside quarter molding is missing; and the painted dial was papered over long ago. Otherwise the clock is in good original condition, and this is a hard model to find. Hands, damasc pendulum and case hardware are original. Ht 30″

Seth Thomas brought this out in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of their “Long Alarm”, but the market had already begun to change and neither model was continued after WWI. A nice example of an uncommon model, and a great beginners clock. Ht 10.2″ [26cm]

    This model has a cocobola wood finish, marqueterie top with a railing on each side, and the case stands 19.5″ high. It has been used, not hidden in the closet. Dial has paper on the old zinc pan, and this the second dial at least, is wearing. For sure I would have the dial repainted. Old black label in the base is about gone, another clue it has had daily use a long time. Accessories include a brass pendulum bob and rod, brass cathedral bell. Big 8 day Lyre movement is running but doesnÕt want to, just gummed up with dried oil. The movement needs cleaning although I did make it run. Apparently it hasnÕt been running the last few years. Strikes the hours on a Cathedral Bell. The screw holes under the movement are wallowed out. Either needs larger screws (please donÕt) or fill the holes and use the same screws. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 218.

    Condition: this clock is in good original condition, with old cocobola finish intact. The top trim has been polished down and wiped over with shellac [grain is still closed]. Original painted dial with 3 or 4 flakes. Note the line drawing for this clock omits the two “ears” on this one, which is like one other we had, so we imagine the drawing was not updated after an early design change. One small chip on top right of marquetry trim; old split at top right of door. Retains original heavy pendulum with damascene pattern and full black label in case bottom that is barely readable. Overall good example. Height 19.5 inches
