Condition: biggest hurt is the missing top crest molding (hard to see it is missing in foto). The top has a new glue block behind it which could be better. Case lost maybe a fourth of its original finish to a wire wool cleaning. Otherwise a decent original clock that will restore fine. Properly signed movement, needs cleaning. Height 19.5 inches

Seth Thomas Sons & Co., Thomaston, CT., “No. 8069” ca 1878,

This was their model No. 8069, which in my humble opinion is one of their most elaborate metal-statue clocks. It is 22 inches high, 19 inches wide, with a great many cast pieces attached by spot solder or with screws. There are globes, compasses, telescope, and other instruments one would use to study the moon and stars. Finish is very clean and evenly worn; if in fact it is worn. One would sup-pose it had a gold or bronze gilt originally. Typical movement, round, bell strike, 8 day, and running very nicely. Porcelain dial is signed, “Mitchell Vance & Co. NY”. Pretty good for a ST Sons dial, just a little flaking around the arbors. Thick beveled glass. This is a great clock and a favorite of the folks that collect ST Sons clocks. We have sold a couple of nice ones and have seen others sell, all 1000 dollars or better. Ly-American, Volume 2, #904.

Seth Thomas & Sons metal clock, No. 8030. Case is 14 1/2 inches high and most probably was repainted at some time in a dull bronze color.

It has a French type movement, round, bell strike, outside count wheel, and signed by Seth Thomas. The porcelain dial is not the quality of the French dials as they were easily chipped around the winding arbors, although the chipping is very minor. Seth did use very heavy beveled glasses and fancy dial rings and bezels. The pendulum is correct and the clock is running strong. Clock’s complete and original. Ly-American No.866.

ca 1876. The quality and detail of this clock is very good. You can actually see the fingernails and the flower petal she is holding in her right hand. Not being a metallurgist is a hindrance here. The catalogs say these statues were gilt or silver finish. I must assumes he has been sandblasted and coated with dark paint. She looks good this way but would be stunning in gold gilt. 8 day, half hour bell strike, round movement with outside count wheel, and running. 18 inch metal case with a seated stature, all completely refinished professionally. The case is a nice blue-green, metal ornaments are Verde Bronze or golden antique color. Mythical birds are the end ornaments, and there is a woman’s bust on each side of the case. There is a lot of detail work, from her eyes to her toenails. One piece porcelain dial with some minor touchup around the winding arbors. Bronze bezel and sash are outstanding, nice beveled glass. Round 8 day movement with the outside count wheel is identical to the French movements, and strikes a bell on the hours. Complete with a back door and correct pendulum. Ly-American, Volume 2. Seth Thomas and Sons statue clock, No. 8022.

I have been preaching for several years that the Seth Thomas and Sons statue clocks would be goingup in price, just as soon as prices for the poplar Ansonia statue prices gotout of reach of the average collector. That started happening a year or twoago. Now I am only speaking to a dozen or so of the Seth Thomas statues, theones that have that “size and look”. This is definitely our favorite andevidently the favorite of many decorators, as they snatch them away from usas quick as we can get them restored. This clock has been professionally restoredin a Syrian Bronze color. Everything is in place except the back door whichis missing. The 8 day movement is running but will need to be put in beat. Signed round French type movement, bell strike, outside count wheel. Theporcelain dial has been touched up where all Seth Thomas porcelain dialschip, around the arbors. The dial looks fine now. I notice that Tran Du LyÕs, American Clocks, Volume 2, gave a value for this clock of $900 in the year2000. I would fully expect it would bring considerably more today.

Condition: Cast spelter case has been cleaned and painted black. The two side drops were damaged and repaired by putting a ball from a 400-day clock pendulum on each one. Statue and medallion are gold painted. Signed porcelain dial is perfect and the hands are original. Movement is clean and running. For Reference, see Tran Ly’s Seth Thomas boo, 3rd Edition, Vol 2, page 1048, and you will see the side trims are supposed to be symmetrical. Ht 15″ [38.1 cm]
