Jan 2020 – 46 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 7”, 1888. The second-smallest Office Calendar, at 26.5 inches (behind the No. 3 “Peanut”). This one is very original. The glasses and hands are old, including the original calendar hand; the dials may have been repainted long ago as they are just too good to still be original paint, but they show a lot of age; the calendar roller paper covers are very dark, and the walnut veneer case shows no repairs and has all the decorative buttons. This one is time-only with a signed ST movement that is running effortlessly. The pendulum bob is a replacement. The calendar day is advancing but the date needs adjustment. Good labels inside, and a date stamp on the back (1888). About all you could ask for. The last one Horton’s sold was in July of 2018 for $610.

Jan 2021 – 144 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 7”, ca. 1884. Office Calendar No. 7 is hard to distinguish from the larger No. 6; the No. 7 has smaller dials and is about 6 inches shorter. This 26.5-inch case is veneered in walnut or mahogany with an old finish and has a great patina. The glasses are old, the dials repainted, the hands correct. The signed 8-day time-only movement is running and the calendar is advancing. AAC sold one last January for $578.

The walnut veneer on this example is excellent, with no losses and clear graining; the finish is old and possibly original. The dials were repainted maybe 25 years ago over the original paint and are really flaking now; you have to strip down to the zinc and use a modern primer to avoid this malady. Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 7”, C. 1878.

Rosewood veneer case is 26.5″ high, with decorative attached buttons, top, bottom, and middle. The case is very similar to their No. 4 and No. 6 models. This case is almost perfect, no bad veneer, no repairs, all original. Key lock on the side. Two labels inside the case, the one on the door says the clock and calendar were set to running November 1, 1878. Original dials have not been repainted and have very little paint loss; however, years ago someone put a coat of varnish or wax on the dials. It has held the paint very good, but it also darkened them somewhat and gives the impression there are brush marks. They aren’t bad, and since the case is so nice I would sure live with the dials. 8 day, spring, striking hours on a large brass bell. Perpetual calendar is functioning and clock is running. Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 7”, C. 1878.

This No. 7 in some ways is a better clock than #64, but the rosewood veneer on #64 always looks better to me. This walnut veneer case is very nice, still with the original finish, a tiny veneer chip or two, scuffed on the bottom of the door, but no harm. This door has a hook on the side, where #64 has a key lock on the side. The biggest negative is that the case apparently split slightly around the lower hinge. It hasn’t been tinkered with and is not bad as is. I probably would not do anything. Dials look very good, color matches, but top dial was repainted at some time. Two excellent full labels. The one on the door says the clock was set to running on August 1, 1878. The case is 26.5″ high. Movement is 8 day, strikes hours on a large brass bell, perpetual calendar is working properly. Jan 2022 – #88 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 6”, 1891. A 32-inch mahogany (or walnut with a dark stain) This is the successor to the Office Calendar No. 4, a bit larger with a larger calendar dial; the calendar mechanism was upgraded to the R.T. Andrews patent movement (1876), and a strike was available (as found here). The bezels were made from solid wood without veneer and a nickel trim ring was added. Buttons were still included, and on this example the two buttons above the calendar dial are improper replacements, the only flaw I can find here. The glass over the time dial is old, the calendar glass modern, and both dials have been repainted, the hands are correct. The 8-day time-and-strike spring-driven movement is signed and running, striking the hours on a wire gong, and the calendar is advancing. The rollers are rather dark and probably There is a large replacement hook to hold the door shut; a smaller hook probably would have been sufficient. Nonetheless, a nice example. Horton’s sold two in 2018, one for $461 and one for $885 (wow!).

8 day, time, perpetual calendar. 12 inch time dial, 10 inch calendar dial. Immaculately maintained, looks almost new it is so clean. The dials have been professionally repainted. I have had this clock hanging in my office for some time but space is getting precious and something has to go. The movements and even the wood inside the case is clean as new. Full label, running. 32 inch rosewood case is perfect. If I were pressed to find something wrong with this clock I would probably say the dials are just a little whiter than I like them. The Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 5” Double Dial Clock is an exceptional piece, renowned for its intricate design and historical significance. This collector’s item, manufactured by the prestigious Seth Thomas Clock Co. around 1884, boasts a distinctive walnut case standing at approximately 50 inches tall.

The clock features two large 14-inch dials, a painted tin dial with an S.T. monogram and Roman numerals on the chapter ring, as well as an outer minute ring marked with ticks and triangles every 5 and diamonds every 15 minutes. A seconds dial above the center is adorned with Arabic numerals every 10 seconds. The lower dial displays a calendar with the same S.T. monogram and Patented mark from February 15, 1876, along with cut-out windows on each side that house revolving cylinders displaying the day of the week on the left and the month on the right.

The clock is equipped with a brass 8-day spring-driven movement, marked with the matching stamped S.T. monogram. The case showcases full turned columns in front, pierced crest and drops along the base, and a hinged windowed door for pendulum access. Originally, the clock included an original pendulum, period key, and even a special key to open the small door underneath the base for viewing the pendulum.

While some veneer chipping on sides near the top and slight toning on certain dials may be present, this clock has been restored where necessary to maintain its historical integrity. Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Office Calendar No. 5”, ca 1884.

A very rare model, large, heavy, and difficult to find one that is complete and does not have a broken tail on the bottom or broken finials and railing on the top. This clock has all those parts but is missing the original calendar movement. The walnut case is 50″ tall, has large 14″ dials, is very heavy and requires two people to carry and hang the clock. It is clean and polished and has been restored where restoration was needed. I cannot tell there is any new wood, etc. but as you know there are craftsmen out there that can do as well as the Seth Thomas workers. The finish on the case may not suit everyone, but could easily be polished and rubbed down to suit a new owner. It is possible the lock has been moved or a new lock installed, but not sure of either. All the case trim appears to be correct and complete. The clock has its correct pendulum, weight, hands, two dials, and keys for both doors. A special key is needed to open the little door underneath the base. That door has a glass for viewing the pendulum. We have sold a half dozen of this model over the years and they generally have brought over $10,000. You can get a reproduction calendar movement from Zero-Distance Ebay Store, based in California, for around $800, or buy clock No. 87 and use that calendar movement. Some collectors look a lifetime for this model. I haven’t seen a half dozen in 25 years. This may only be the 3rd one I have had for sale. 50″ walnut case with polished French walnut trimmings (according to the catalogs). I would have called it burl walnut that is polished like fine furniture. All the ST calendar movements are 8 day, time only, 1 weight that descends down the right side. Beat scale in the bottom, very nice nickel bob with the Seth Thomas circles, glass viewing port in the bottom below the pendulum. You can’t see it unless the clock is hung very high. There are two labels inside, the white one reminding you not to oil the calendar movement and a black one with operating instructions and signed by ST. The clock is in good running condition, very clean inside and out. There is no evidence the clock has been tinkered with, other than what may be needed with regular use over long periods. Seth Thomas “OFFICE CALENDAR No. 5”, in walnut with burled panels, double dial perpetual calendar, 14 inch dials, weight driven, C.1890 (dated presentation)

The original finish on the case has been rubbed out to a nice sheen; the grain is still closed and beautiful. This clock was retailed by G. W. Sayer of Spencer, Mass and was a presentation gift to “Goodwill Lodge No. 181, IOOF, Feb 25th, 1890 by Member’s Unity Circle”, so engraved on silvered plaque at center of door. The dealer, Sayer hung and checked out the clock in Jan of 1890, so indicated on their card tacked inside door. And with the instruction sheet from Seth Thomas indicating that the calendar was set for the year 1888. The rollers have been recovered and both dials were repainted some time ago. The wood screws pulled out for the iron movement bracket and the wall hanger, and have been replaced with machine screws (not a bad idea for something this heavy). Has near perfect inside labels and great damascene pendulum (nickel finish on pend and reflectors). Note the large trapezoid movement is similar to that in the Office No. 8 calendar, except it is 72 beat instead of 60 beat. Tran Ly has several references on the No. 5, including a foto of the movement in the 2nd edition St, page 435, and the clock shown in 3rd Edition, page 94. 2004 price guide = $18,000. There are some flakes on the dials which keep this clock out of the “outstanding” category, but they are original, and most folks would be happy with them. This is a large and heavy clock, so be sure you have a strong stud to hang it on. The dials are 14″. Note there is a glass covered crescent shaped opening at the bottom where the swinging pendulum and index can be seen. The door over this area is still intact and has never been broken off (a troublesome spot on this model). The original finish on this oak case has been carefully cleaned and waxed and is an attractive golden color. We have seen this model sell recently for $17,000, and our estimate is quite reasonable. Clock retain original Mix Bros lower movement +rollers and proper upper movement and a near mint label inside. In better condition, this would have fetched $3000. No key; has good label; height 24″

This timepiece is usually referred to as the “Peanut”. The rosewood veneered case is nice condition with what looks like a newer layer of shellac over the old finish. There is small stress crack on the lower edge of the front door. The original painted upper dial is very nice with some minor paint loss around the mounting screws, winding arbors and a couple of small chips. The hands are original. The lower dial has darkened with age and has paint loss around the mounting screws and one small area on the edge. Someone has added a date of 195? and F.R.R. to the dial. There is some damage in this date area. The tail to the calendar hand was broken off and is missing. There has been a repair to the case in the area of the top door hinge. Has a good black/gold label inside door. Height 24 inches

Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Office Calendar No. 3”, ca 1863.

To most of us this is their “Peanut” model. If I had the money and wall space I would attempt to corner the market on this model. This is my favorite of the Seth Thomas wall calendar clocks. I have three in my office and as you might suspect, I am selling the least perfect of the three. If the dials did not need painting I would keep this one. It has typical ST dials, flaking. I am afraid they are at the point of having to be repainted. Each jolt from hauling or packing, will cause more flakes to fall. This little clock is only 24″ high, mahogany veneered, and in very nice condition. The round solid plate, 8 day movement was only used in this calendar model. The calendar mechanism is by Mix Brothers, and all movements, ST hands, and dials are original. Note the near perfect label on the back of the door, and the old brass bob and winding key. Key lock on the side, key included but probably not original. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 92; and Ly-Calendar No. 600.

Miniature Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 3”, or better known as the “Peanut”.

The walnut case is 9″ tall and made to scale. The painted wood dials, hands, glasses, are all like the original peanut clocks. The small time only movement has a wire running to the calendar movement that moves the calendar dials. Instructions with the clock tell you how to move and adjust the “day of the week” and “month” rollers. Pendulum, winding key and tweezers (to adjust the calendar rollers) come with the clock. A label on the back says in part, “Limited Edition of 26 Pieces / Michael Paul / No. 8”. Pretty amazing. Ly-Calendar, page 248.

Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 3”, ca 1863, called the “Peanut” by today’s collectors.

The catalog pictures show the time dial with and without a recess in the center. I have had them both ways. All “Peanuts” were made early in the calendar clock production years and used the Mix Brothers patent calendar mechanism. Peanuts also used the ST hands, S on the minute hand and T on the hour hand. The old original zinc dials have been repainted, which 99% of them have been. 24-inch walnut veneer case is near perfect, and has a good black label on the door. Round Seth Thomas movement runs 8 days, and was apparently only used in the “Peanut” clock. I owned this clock for 20years, sold it to another collector, and recently bought his collection of120 clocks. This is a clock anyone would be proud to own, all original and running. Ly-Seth Thomas No.57-60; and Ly-Calendar No.599-601.

The lettering on the dial is nearly worn off, but you can see faintly the word “Calendar”. The calendar drums have replaced papers. Original “S. T.” hands. Ht 24″

Condition: the case has been attractively refinished and the veneer on both bezels is still good. Although there are 2 old dials with the clock, the top is correct and the bottom is from an Office No. 1, and mounts in turned about 3 degrees to the right (day and month holes do not line up properly). This could be solved by re-mounting the dial into new holes (we used the original holes), or having the Dial House make a new lower dial. Otherwise it is a nice clock with original hands, weight, pendulum, door lock, etc. Height 42.5 inches

This clock lost its crown maybe 100 years ago and a very good cabinet maker made a new one apparently from a verbal description of what it should look like. He got the OG molding too tall and the angled top to tall, adding over 2″ to the factory height. Then someone cut out the calendar dial to show the pendulum swinging, and repainted both dials poorly. Both movements are original; one rod has come unattached from the calendar movement, but it is present. Original grid pendulum, bob and weight. Case partially stripped; rosewood veneer good except for minor losses; rollers original. A Major project, or these 2 movements will bolt in a Calendar-No.1 case if you have it. Height 44 1/2″

Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 2”, C. 1862, when calendar clocks were first offered.

They were introduced in their catalog of 1863. The full black label shows the Plymouth Hollow address as does the dial. I researched several of the early calendars clocks and none of the first movements were identical, which means to me they hadn’t settled on one movement in those formative years. This is a magnificient original rosewood case. Granted there are some corner nicks and a tiny bit of veneer chipped on the left side but I challenge anyone to show me a better, more original clock. I removed both 14″ square dial pans, (they are the original pans-repainted by Jim West, Houston) and the screw holes are tight. The screws couldn’t have been removed more than 2-3 times in 140 years. The case is 40.75″ high, all the catalogs say they are 42.5″?? This is a big clock, none of the catalog pictures do them justice. It is 8 day of course, 1 correct and original weight, time only. This model is very rare and hardly comes up for sale. We saw where one sold at a live auction recently for $18,000. This fine looking oak case is 49″ high, has the original finish with a light crust on the wood. The case is near perfect. We found one tiny wood flake on the tail, otherwise the case is as nice as you would want. The door lock and other case hardware, the two dials, hands, and other parts are all original. There are some tiny paint flakes on the two dials, the calendar roller papers are original, same with the weight, beat scale, pendulum, stick, and the brass pulley. This is a relative new clock and an exact copy of the original Seth Thomas No. 13. It was made of solid oak, a very heavy clock that weighs about 50 pounds. It is 49″ high and 19″ wide, has nice carved designs, and small button ornaments, all identical to the original. The brass 8 day time only movement is near identical to an original, and powered by a single brass weight. The calendar movement is almost identical, is perpetual, and changes on leap years like the original ST clocks. Painted metal dial pans, hands, beat scale, pendulum bob, are all near identical to an original No. 13 calendar clock. We had the movements serviced and fine tuned to make sure they would be operating properly when you receive it. Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 256-257.

(Early Version) in very good condition. The oak case has been attractively refinished (exterior); dials and hands are original and excellent. Case back retains original instruction label. The roller covers were probably renewed some time ago and have a little age. Note the weight is still in the channel on the right, so take care when you move the clock. Overall a nice clock; ready to enjoy, height 49″

C.1886, Seth Thomas, “Office Calendar No. 10”

in walnut, attractively restored and in outstanding condition. This case style was one of Seth Thomas most versatile, being used for the No. 6 (both time and double time), as well as the No. 10 calendar for nearly 25 years. This is the early version with the calendar dial in the base and the pendulum visible behind a carved grill between the two dials. These dials were professionally done by the Dial House and are about as good as it gets for repaints. The well made movement is driven by a weight which descends down a channel, inside the right side of the case. Retains good interior label. This is the earlier version of the Office Calendar No. 10 with the opening between the time and calendar dials to allow pendulum bob visibility. The oak case is in very good condition and has been refinished. There is a vertical crack at both the top and bottom of the door. One of the two lower finials shows some loss to the tip. The bottom drop finial is missing, There are excellent labels inside the case. The calendar drum papers are original and darkened with age. Both the painted time and calendar dials are in excellent condition with very minimal loss. The hands are all original. The door glass is original.

the case is in very good condition with original finish, There is veneer damage to the base piece which will need attention. The original painted dials are in good condition but have been coated with varnish or shellac. The hands are original. This clock comes with a cast iron weight, which was used on the earlier models. The brass pendulum bob is damaskeened. One of the case top finials has very minor damage to its tip. The case is dated January, 1890 (0981A stenciled on the case back).

the clock retains its original untouched finish. The lower left finial tip is absent. Both dials are original with original paint and in good condition with some very minor inpaint above center arbor. This is the earlier model where the nicely damascened original pendulum bob is visible mid-case through the fretwork. The labels and date stamp on rear are all in good condition. The nickel pendulum bob is nicely damaskeened. The door glass is original. The upper two finials are original, but the bottom two may be replaced.

the case retains its original finish rubbed down with a split in the top of the case and one of the lower finials damaged slightly. Both dials have been professionally repainted and the center arbor hole in the upper time dial has been inexplicably enlarged, tends to indicate the period dial was on another clock at one time. The weight is repainted, the finely damascene pendulum is original and there is a label in good condition. Ht 49″
