7 Jeweled ships clock with 8-day ship's bell striking system.

7 Jeweled ships clock with 8-day ship’s bell striking system.

This pristine ships bell clock was manufactured by the SETH THOMAS CLOCK COMPANY around 1930 in Thomaston, Connecticut. It is all original with a silvered brass 3 3/4 inch dial that retains its original spade hands and etched black Arabic numerals. The newly polished brass case has been laquered to prevent tarnish and looks as good as it did the day it left the factory in Connecticut. The case style is often referred to as the ‘Helmsman’ because of its spoked ship’s wheel design. However, the correct name given this clock by Seth Thomas was the ‘MAYFLOWER’. The fine movement has a seven jewel mechanism that is running well and striking the ships bells perfectly every half-hour. For you ‘landlubbers’ the ships bell striking system goes like this: The clock sounds eight bells at 12 o’clock…4 o’clock and 8 o’clock. Then the count begins all over again every half-hour with one bell, two bells, three bells etc. until eight bells are sounded again. It’s not all that hard to understand if you think of the eight-bells at 12 o’clock and then one bell at 12:30 and 2 bells at 1:00 and three bells at 1:30 and 4 bells at 2 and five bells at 2:30 and so on until it reaches 8 bells again at 4 o’clock and then it starts all over again. Still confused? Then maybe you should consider joining the Army where they tell time differently!! :0) The clock includes an 8-day Seth Thomas No. 115-A time and strike movement and a micrometer on the dial to adjust the speed of the clock for excellent time-keeping. On the dial are the words: SEVEN JEWELED EIGHT DAY SHIP’S BELL in two lines of Upper Case letters. At the bottom edge of the dial are the words MADE BY SETH THOMAS IN USA. All marine clocks of that era were manufactured to the exacting specifications dictated by the U.S. Naval Observatory. The wooden plaque on which the clock is mounted is a recent addition which can be hung on the wall or displayed on an easily obtainable desk easel (sold by craft stores). This is a really attractive clock that has been professionally serviced to provide years of faithful timekeeping. Height: 8 in. (20.32 cm) Depth: 5 in. (12.70 cm) Width: 11 in. (27.94 cm) Weight: 5

    Antique Seth Thomas Marcy Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas Marcy Clock

Jan 2021 – 80 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Marcy”, 1891. Perhaps my favorite Seth Thomas wall clock of those that are generally available; the Marcy is 46 inches tall and is distinguished by its quarter-hour double-strike on two cup bells. counts the hours on a cathedral gong. This one is in oak, with an old finish overbrushed with a darker stain, giving it an antiqued look that I like. Note the many carvings on the door and crest. The lower glass is newer, the dial glass old. dial was repainted by The Dial House, the hands are correct. The spring-driven movement is signed and running but shows some battle scars; it would benefit from cleaning. Although Horton’s sold one in 2017 for $2780, recent prices at other auctions are typically around $1700. $1500-$2000. I put this clock up and ran it for a day and find that it is not chiming on the quarter hours; one lifting arm is sticking on the strike wheel pins.  Note that the strike wheel has had some repairs as well, and the movement is dirty overall.  I recommend an overhaul, and bear in mind that this is not a simple movement – lots of levers and gears.

It is a one owner clock that was shipped to us from the UK. The original dial is remarkable, with the name of the retailer: R. SALSBURY and SONS, GUILDFORD. The oak veneer retains original golden finish with some minor nicks and scrapes, commensurate with age. Retains good interior label. C.1886, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Marcy, 8-day time/strike with striking on quarter hours on two cup bells and the hour on a gong rod.

This oak case model is complete and in generally good condition, exceptions noted. There is a little minor lifting of the veneer in a couple of places on the lower door, and a couple of chips at the top. There is a burn mark on molding just below the door that was probably caused by an oil lamp or candle; original shipping holes in the case back beside the pendulum have been filled. The dial pan is new, with another old metal dial fastened to the pan. The dial mask, is made from an old piece of oak dresser side and looks OK. The hands and movement are original. The pendulum is a proper replacement. Despite these problems, this is not a common clock. With a little effort a proper type dial can be located and adapted to the case, and the minor trim problems can be handled by a good cabinet maker. C.1886, Seth Thomas, “MARCY”, in walnut, 8-day, quarter strike on 2 bells, and in very good restored condition.

The gentleman who consigned this clock owned it for several years but was not aware that the lower portion of the door, below the dial section is restored with a new side piece. This was obviously done by a competent cabinet maker, however he omitted a knob which could still be added. You may compare the basic construction with lot #342 and find it the same. Lastly, the bottom finial has been made to match the side ones, and it should be wider model. The average person would not even notice this, and the clock is otherwise fine with great original dial, hands, damascene pendulum (nickel), beat scale and gong. For reference, see Ly’s Seth Thomas book (1996), pages 148 & 149. If not for the restoration, this would have easily garnered $4500. See also lot 342. Height 46 inches

Seth Thomas “Marble No. 144” ca 1886.

This is a rarity, imported marble case with open escapement on the dial. IsnÕt this about the only clock Seth Thomas sold that had open escapement? Since the cases were imported isnÕt it possible the round movement with outside count wheel, and open escapement, were put in the case in France? If Seth had made them in Thomaston as they supposedly did their round movements for the Seth Thomas and Sons clocks, they would have put the open escape movement in their SethThomas and Sons clocks. The movement is 8 day, half hour strike on cathedralbell, running. Two piece porcelain dial has some faint hairlines in the outerdial ring. Marble case is etched with gold filling, three nice pieces ofmarble inlay on the front. Really a super nice clock. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 144.
