The clock has a fifteen-day double wind spring movement with dead beat escapement. Other than some roughness and couple small chips around the circumference, the marble is in nice condition, with no cracks and good coloring. The clock currently has a galvanized metal ring just behind the dial to protect the movement, and a wooden box acting as a dust cover for the movement (lacks rear door of dust cover). These early Seth Thomas and Sons clocks used French type movements. This one is typical French, 8 day, round, bell strike, outside count wheel. It is signed by Seth Thomas. When making this series of clocks they certainly put their money in the movement, dial, bezel, and beveled glass, which I supposeis more important than the cast metal case. This case is 16 inches high and18 inches wide. Most all the cases were white metal, very few werebronzes. The finish they used on all the models was not good, as most allhave to be repainted, or have expensive bronze or gold gilt put on. Thereis a lot of detail to this clock, it is original, complete, and had a newfinish put on several years ago. For the price this is certainly a lot ofclock. Ly-American, Volume 2, No. 851.

Condition: the small oak veneered panel is missing from its framed opening. The embossed pendulum is from a school clock and ‘close but no cigar’ as a match. The case has been refinished. There are 2 holes bottom rt and left drilled for screwing the case to the wall. The wooden support behind the movement is replaced. Seth Thomas Clock Co. hanging clock, the “Lunar”, ca 1892.

This clock has the same movement as the “Jupiter”. It is an 8 day lyre shape with an extension on the top that hold the hammer that strikes the large cup bell on the hours, and it supports the moon phase dial that orbits behind the time dial. The movement is powered by the two special grooved weights. The clock is wound by pulling down on the center chains. This clock also has a decorative cast pendulum bob with a wood stick, original chains, door lock and winding key, original signed dial that has had some old and minor restoration, and the correct pair of hands. The mahogany case is 41″ high and 20″ wide, all original but the wood was polished and rubbed giving it a nice sheen. We recently had the movement cleaned and serviced. The books say this model first appeared in the ST catalogs in 1894, but our clock has a factory stamp on the back “2981A”, or January 1892. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 319-320. Booked for $3750 five years ago. This is only our 3rd Lunar in over 30 years of selling thousands of clocks.

the old finish is in good condition, but the lower portion of the case is absent and has been partially replaced by the scrolled piece that formerly was on the front of the base. The top scrolls have some age cracks, visible only from the top. The metal dial is repainted, the moon dial now is new paper, and striking is on a coil gong, not on a bell as described in Ly. The lyre plate movement, with ladder chains, is correctly signed and retains the wheels for advancing the moon dial. The fluted weights and cast pendulum bob look correct. Ht 29.5″

Seth Thomas contemporary clock resembling the earlier “Lunar” model.

This is a 3 weight clock striking 8 rods on the quarters and hours. Chain pull up 8 day movement is running well. Full label with instructions on the back. The clock was made after 1970 when they merged with the Talley Industries, and before 1982 when the company moved from Thomaston, Conn. to Georgia. Cherrycase is 32″ high plus the pendulum and weights hanging below. Full door infront plus the whole top comes off like the bonnet of a tall clock. Nearmint clock except for tiny scrapes on the weights and pendulum, not worthmentioning really. A lot of clock for this minimum, and very very heavy.

These clocks turn up from time to time but often in a state of distress. This one has had the dial professionally repainted, and it is exactly correct and as it should be. The finish on the case is original , with minor nicks and scrapes commensurate with its age. Now Seth Thomas in their catalog lists this clock as 41 inches, however, that dimension includes the weights hanging below the case; the case itself is only 36″. Two weight movement is complete and sound; clock ticks and strikes. Pendulum is in box with weights & finial.

Seth Thomas alarm clock, “Long Alarm” ca 1910.

Bought and distributed by a New York company as an advertising piece. Inscribed on the dial is, “Geo. W. Welsh’s Son., New York”, plus the street address. Touted as a “long alarm” it is that. It will alarm for about 15 minutes with one winding. It is not a sound you want to listen to for 15 minutes. One day movement, seconds dial and alarm dial, wind and set in back, alarm switch in front. Metal case is 9 inches high, finished in an oxidized copper finish. Looks nice and original but typical of this clock the round metal on top tends to crack and split, no doubt from heat and cold. This is a very nice example of Seth’s top of the line alarm clocks. Glass windows in sides and over the good signed dial. There are seconds and alarm subsidiary dials. 1 day movement, alarms on a nickel bell on the base. Runs and quits, means it needs servicing. There is one wind key from an E.N. Welch clock. Ly-Seth Thomas No.1317.

Seth Thomas Novelty Clock, “Lodge”, ca 1892.

Gold gilt front, nickel plated metal case throughout. Glass in the sides. 1 day lever movement, time and alarm. 3 inch dial with ST logo, seconds and alarm dials. Complete with few negatives; a couple of hands not original, alarm works, but not shutting off properly, movement runs, but could use a bath and some oil. A pretty good example of this early novelty. Condition: Nickel plated metal case is in good condition with wear to the plating and some damage to base molding and the right front foot, some shingles on roof slightly bent. Original paper dial is pretty clean with some minor staining. Hands are original. Threaded winding key to the time side is missing; movement is otherwise complete. Alarm bell is a replacement. Height 7.5 inches

Condition: Nickel plated metal case is in good condition with wear to the plating and some damage to the right front foot, and the metal molding above. Original paper dial is soiled in a couple of places. Hour hand is a replacement and seconds bit is missing. Alarm bell is inside the case and needs a standard and screw. Movement is complete with both keys and ticking. Height 7.5 inches

C.1892, Seth Thomas, LODGE, stamped metal novelty clock in the shape of a log cabin.

This is a 1-day, time and alarm model and in good condition. There is minor discoloration of the original dial along the lower margin, and the minute hand has been changed (looks OK). The tinned steel case has a gilt front and nickel plated sides. If you look on Lindy Larson’s website, you will see he has a German copy (probably Junghans) that is a dead ringer for this clock. C.1910, Seth Thomas “18 Inch Lobby”, as-found, case incomplete, dial refinished.

Note the entire top and bottom trims are missing, and finish has been stripped off. See lot No.325 in this sale, for what the case should look like. Interestingly the main portion of the case is in cherry, an uncommon wood for this model. If you attend the sale, you might take measurements off of lot 325 and make the missing trim on your own. Seconds hand is also lacking; main hands are original; glass old. Also for an unknown reason, someone switched the door hinges so the door opens from the right rather than the left-this can be put back easily as nothing has been filled or replaced. Measurement shown is for what part of the case is there. If all original, it would have brought 2000 dollars. Height 26 inches

long ago, someone replaced the top finials with acorn style finials that matched the bottom 4, apparently unaware that they should be little globes; they look OK and are glued on tight. The pendulum was lost at some point, and someone substituted a wooden stick with hook to accept a fusee bob. Other than these 2 small points, this clock is otherwise in excellent original condition. with superior original finish and great dial. Minor nicks and scrapes to case top. For reference, see Ly’s Seth Thomas book, 3rd edition, page 343. Ht 38″

the oak case has been attractively refinished to a golden color. The finials are replacements, close, but should be globes on top and acorns on the bottom, and two finials are absent bottom rear. Original painted dial is excellent, with only minor paint loss at the mounting screws and some slight lifting at 8 o’clock.. This clock came to us from California, and dial bears the inscription “Montgomery Bros, Los Angeles”, which appears to have been applied to the dial when first purchased in 1896. Hands and pendulum are original. Part of the Geneva stop is missing on the movement, which is otherwise complete and functioning OK. Ht 38″

The dial suggests that this movement is the 30 day version, however the movement duration has not been confirmed. The case has been refinished at some point. There are several areas of minor veneer damage on the front door, and the lower left return. The painted dial is in excellent condition. All three hands are original.

Medium oak case, cleaned and polished. Large case is 38 inches high, 25 inches wide. Seth Thomas movement attached to an iron back plate. It is clean, signed, and running. Original 18 inch metal dial with good paint. Brass beat scale and pendulum. Isn’t this a No.40, 15 day, double wind, time only movement? Seth Thomas “18 Inch Lobby”, C. 1909, or a slight variation thereof.

The middle section is all original, good wood work on the front door. The pendulum viewing window should be a round bullseye piece of wood, but an inquiring mind decided to remove it. The 15 day time only movement is signed and original to this case. It is stamped “24” on the right side. This is a No. 40 movement but why it is stamped 24 escapes me. Brass pendulum bob, stick, and beat scale are original. The 18″ zinc dial has been expertly repainted. Moving on to the top and base, both have been remade, and expertly done, stained to match the case body, attached and fitted very well. Why they didn’t attempt to make it look like the catalog pictures is beyond me. The mahogany case is a tad over 36″ high, a fine looking clock, just not all original. Ly-Seth Thomas #384.

Oak case in an old finish has a small piece of veneer missing near 6 o’clock and some veneer chips on the bottom right edge. Original dial pan has been repainted Original hands. The panel that supports the dial has some lifting of the veneer. This looks to be a variation on the Lobby model as this example does not have a bottom bracket nor any indication it ever had one. The top looks to have finials at one time that are now missing as a result of having the ends of the top shortened.

Condition: the case is in excellent condition with original finish. The original painted dial is excellent with a little fading of the numerals . The hands and case hardware are original. There are minor imperfections with case, commensurate with age, but overall a very nice original example of this model. The case has been nicely cleaned with cotton kleanser and waxed. At the Syracuse regional in August, one of these in Cherry sold 3 times during the mart, ending up at 5000+ dollars. Height 38 inches

Condition: This clock is in need of restoration, as the entire bottom skirt, splat and columns are missing. the dial is flaking, but can probably be saved with professional attention. In any case, good examples of this model have been selling for 4500 dollars, so our estimate should allow for restoration. See also lot 387, with internet foto of base so you can plan new bottom.
