  • Antique Seth Thomas “Atlas” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas rare quarter striking mantle clock, “Atlas”, ca 1884, as indicated by the factory manufacturing stamp on the backboard. Made of carefully selected walnut wood, the clock is 22.5 inches high, three quarter turned columns on the front and quarter columns on the back. The columns were turned showing grooves and various thicknesses. The case is highly polished and looks like a parlor clock should. Nickel plated Seth Thomas bob, beveled and etched like only they could. Matching nickel pendulum hanger, gong base, hinges, and dial rings. Over half of the old black label remains on the base, brass beat scale, and brass strike hammers. An outstanding glass with gold design, original painted zinc dial is about as good as you could hope for in a clock this old, and particularly a Seth Thomas dial, as they always lose their paint early. Some crusty finish remains but for the most part, it has been well maintained with regular cleaning and polishing. We just do not get these quarter hour strikers (Atlas and Hecla) that are any better than this. I would think the new Ly- Seth Thomas books due out in late 1994 will value this clock upwards of $2500. Ly-Seth Thomas (1996 Book) page276.

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Beijing City Series” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas City Series Clock, Beijing Model, c. 1875 original reverse painted glass in the bottom shows a picture of some pheasants, and the case of this clock is in nice condition. It even has a nice label behind the gong on which it strikes. Plus, the large eight day striking Seth Thomas movement inside runs on the uncommon 24 hour system. The hands on this clock run at half speed, so one revolution of the hour hand signifies the passage of an entire day. It points vertically at midnight and noon, and horizontally at six o’clock. Also, the minute hand takes a full two hours to make one sweep, so it points horizontally on the half hour. Special gearing inside this clock allows for this interesting format. The dial is marked accordingly in Chinese characters, as well as numbered from 1 to 12 twice around in roman numerals.

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Box Clock” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: C.1816, Seth Thomas, Plymouth, Conn., rare wooden works, Terry patent “Box Clock” in excellent condition. The only noted replacements on this clock are the painted numerals and spandrel decorations on the reverse of the original glass, and NONE of the 9 known examples of this model has the original paint intact on the tablet. The clock is otherwise original, right down to the finish on the case. Rack and snail strap wood movement is sound and the label is excellent; retains original weights with integral pulleys. This box form, with the dial painted on the reverse of the glass, is the earliest model of Connecticut wooden shelf clocks, and is the rarest as well. Note the engraved label states that the clock was patented by Eli Terry, but made and sold by Seth Thomas. Since Terry’s patent was granted on June 12, 1816, this clock may date a few months earlier or later than June 12. Recall that Seth Thomas had worked closely with Terry since 1806. The sister to this clock is illustrated in Ken Roberts’ book on Eli Terry, pages 46-47. This clock was in the collection of Chet Durfee until 1952, and owned by Haddon Kirk from 1952 until now. See Distin and Bishop, page 108. One of the finest examples known, and certain to attract special attention. Height 20″

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 266” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: C.1913, Seth Thomas Clock Co., “Chime Clock No. 266 ,”8-day time/strike 8-bell sonora chime mantel clock in good condition, with restoration. This case has been refinished and the movements cleaned. There is some minor lifting of the mahogany veneer on the sides of the case, especially near the top with a couple of splits and repairs. The silvered dial has minor wear and tarnish, commensurate with age. The veneer on the front of the case is good and shows off the inlaid panel quite well. You may set the chime selector to alternate between Whittington and Westminster on this model. Not quite as nice cosmetically as the two 8-bell Sonoras we sold in Nov-’02, but still a great sounding clock. Height 18.5 inches

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 57” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: C.1915, Seth Thomas, “Chime Clock No. 57”, 5-Bell Sonora chime clock in good original condition. This clock is a one family item, consigned from a cottage in Maine where it has sat for some time. The finish has alligatored, but looks Ok to me, better than a refinish. The movements are both dirty and dry, it will eek out the Westminster tune, strike and tick, but sure wants a cleaning. Retains original dial, hands, pendulum, key and hardware. For reference to this model, see Ly’s book on Seth Thomas, 1996, page 218. Height 11 inches
